Simon's 52 in 2023

I've never seen a stone birdhouse.
Well spotted and captured.
Yes, lifting the shadows helps a lot.

With the lifted shadows you get a bit better detail of the birdhouse which I think makes a fascinating choice for robust. Do like the grotto shot and the back story.

Nice one, that's definitely more robust than your normal bird house. I'm with you on the choice, I find the second shot a bit too busy so the eye doesn't settle.

Thanks all. I normally would take time to edit things like shadows a bit, but given that 1) I was pushed for time and 2) it was a simple iPhone shot and 3) I just generally go at things like a bull in a china shop you got the original image. I MUST learn to slow down

Week 21 - Nearby

Thank you @Cobra for what is essentially a free week ;) - so many interpretations of "nearby" that can easily fit and not require too much taxation of my limited creativity!

For this week's theme I've chosen a set from a short walk we do quite often just a 5 minute car ride away in Sully, the next village down the coast here in South Wales. It can be bleak in the winter when it's great and the wind is howling up the Bristol Channel, but today is was gorgeously sunny, if very breezy!

My chosen shot in many ways is perhaps the least aesthetically pleasing of the bunch as it's an iPhone shot of a stone plaque on the Wales coast path on the Sully foreshore. But in showing various landmarks from this point, it doe indicate which are "nearby" and which are further afield, so it fits the theme nicely.

The other images are much more typically my preferred shooting style of the area around me.

Costal rocks

The flat sedimentary rocks are typical of this bit of coast. A little further around the bay are some dinosaur footprints!

Colourful cliffs

Ok, the cliffs are pretty low, but the colours are vibrant (although full discolour I was shooting in Velvia on my Fuji X-S10 which I tend to do a lot, but even in standard they were very colourful.

Driftwood

This is a hell of a lump of driftwood - unfortunately I just got the focus a bit wrong on this, but it's OK if you squint.

A good set Simon, I understand why you chose the shot you did but, you're right, the others are more pleasing. I particularly like shots #2 and #4.

All nice images and fit the theme really well. I like 2 & 5 best of the bunch.

The plaque looked familliar but different, I got a picture of one when out walking the other week just above Wenvoe.

Thanks John. It's been there a few years - haven' spent he Wenvoe one, but we walk there occasionally - will keep my eye out.

Very appropriate choice for the theme Simon.
Looks a lovely location.
I assume the distance to the English towns is across the channel?

Good set showing the local area, the cliffs best shot for me but agree the plaque fits the theme.

Looks like a lovely place.. and sunshine to boot!
Thanks Helen. It’s not a bad spot! Just a shame the water's more brown than blue due to all the silt!

Cheers Peter. Yes I believe it’s straight line distances

Good set showing the local area, the cliffs best shot for me but agree the plaque fits the theme.
Thanks Keith

Great idea and usefully informative. Personally though I really like the wood on the beach.

Thanks Roger. The driftwood was my preferred shot of the shot in terms obpf overal composition, but I think it’s slightly out of focus (I rushed the shot - a common failing of mine!) which is one of the reasons I didn’t go with it.

Week 22 - Irregular

Sorry folks. Massive cop out this week. I've sustained an injury to my left knee following two rounds of golf this weekend past (a knee on which I had a partial knee replacement 3 years ago). Currently laid up resting with ice, elevation and compression and not going anywhere in the next couple of days - hoping it'll recover enough as we're supposed to be away in the Lakes next week! The knee's about twice the size as normal (!) so highly irregular.

Oh no! Hope it heals ok! That aside - fab take on the theme :)

That is quite some difference in size there! Rest up and feel better soon!

Thanks Graham! Left’s always been a bit “lumpier” than right due to arthritic changes and a couple of surgeries, but this is another level! Painkillers working though (y)

Wow, sorry to hear that Simon. I hope you're feeling better and up and about soon!

Yep that definitely fits the theme so that’s a positive , hope its better for the lakes next week

Yep the black and white one for me. Good choice Simon.

B/W one is the one Simon.
You seem to have been around a lot of bars!:)
