Week 24 - Something beginning with P

Well back from my cruise and something beginning with P has to be Penarth Pier.

I was torn between shots 1 and 4, but went with 1 as it's all about the P :)

Very nice Simon. From those I don't know which I'd pick as I like them all so I'll just go with your choice and say that No.1 is easily the best and obviously the one to pick :D :D

Very nicely done Simon :D and I'm glad to see some more pier shots as I couldn't believe I'd be the only one.

Thanks Alan. It a-piers that at least a couple of us were thinking along the same lines.....

It was the first thing I thought of and I expected an avalanche of pier pictures.

Fab set. It's the pier and pooches for the theme for me!

Cheers Dave. I was tempted with the dogs version - I just missed capturing a shot where one of them was jumping in and made a huge splash - that would have been my pick if I'd have got it.

I like them all Simon and I think, like Dave, that I would have chosen the swimming dogs one.
They just make me want to go and sit by the sea

Thanks Alan. It was lovely down there yesterday. For once, rather than the usual gravy brown water of the Bristol Channel there was actually some clarity to the water. Not much, but a tiny bit!

I agree with your chosen image Simon,.........however............. Petunias in front of Penath Pier........has three "P"s ........:)

The petunias would be better if they didn't disect the pier, maybe a higher viewpoint.

I think your chosen shot is the one.

Pete

All good shots Simon, I love Peering at Piers when I'm out with my camera.

Week 25 - Snapper's Choice

This week I finally traded in my almost 4 year old iPhone XR for an iPhone 13 Pro. I've been lusting after an improved camera on my phone since my son upgraded to his iPhone 11 a couple of years back with it's much improved (over the XR) camera. With the 12 and 13 iterations upping the game again, I've held on for too long. I take a lot of phone shots so a decent camera on my phone is a real bonus especially on the occasions when I don't have my Fuji X-S0, Panny FZ330 bridge or even my pocket sized Sony RX100vi with me. On our recent cruise, our friends newly acquired iPhone 13 Pro really showed up the limitations of my XR's camera, and so although I hadn't intended to purchase, I'd gone into town with my wife and daughter last week and just "happened" to wander into the Cardiff Apple Store. Result.....new iPhone 13 Pro :naughty:

Anyway, I thought I'd take the opportunity of this week's Snapper's Choice theme to post a couple of shots from the phone as I get used to it. I'm sure many of you will already have great camera phones, but this is a real step up for me.

The first seascape shot is taken with the 13 Pro's ultra-wide angle in an otherwise standard setting, and the second is a close up of a perennial sweet pea growing on a cliff wall in portrait mode than blurs the background. Cleverly, when editing on the iPhone, you can alter the aperture setting on your taken shot to increase or decrease the background blur.

It's also got a macro (well close up) mode that's pretty impressive so you might see some shots like that from me in the future.

You all probably know all this, but I'm please as punch with this camera - it's a great, and for me very worthwhile upgrade and addition to my photographic armoury.

Both excellent images. I got the iPhone13 standard version last Christmas after using a Nokia for three years. The difference in the camera quality is amazing. I wish I had gone for the PRO version now. Your images make me jealous :)

I like both, Both dramatic in their own ways :D
Thank you both

Sports - Well framed with no one overlapped, would have considered a tighter crop to focus on the subjects.

Parallel - My favourite it number 3 as there is more of a story, or at least something I can conjure up about it

Metal - I like the patterns in number 2 the best

Treasure - Black and white conversion ticks the box for me. Hope you enjoyed your holidays. We done a Mediterranean back to back cruise 26 years ago, would be great to re-visit with a modern camera.

Solid - It amazes me the engineering of buildings achieved without the access to modern technology we enjoy nowadays. They are definitely "solid" construction.

Beginning with a P - My favourite is number 2, not necessarily for the dogs but the composition which includes some of the shore in the foreground.

Snappers Choice - Both worthy shots with nice a nice blur on the background in image 2. I think going forward computational photography is going to take phone camera images to an even higher level.

Thanks for the feedback and comments Stuart!

Both great shots Simon, the wide angle is very dramatic. Interesting about changing the camera settings after the shot is taken.

Thanks Bill. Yes, albeit within the limitations of the tiny sensor and lens, you can shift between f1.4 and f16. It works quite well
quick and dirty example below. The same shot edited

The shadows of the clouds on the sea look great.
Thanks Nick. The clouds make the shot for me. It was sunny and blue sky this side of the Bristol Channel, but black as Mordor and lamping down on the Bristol/Somerset side.

Lovely shots Simon, dramatic and clear.

You are making me want to upgrade. I have an Xs, and my previous was a 6, so the Xs still feels quite new :sneaky:
it looks like fun! Lovely wide angle shot.

I like your chosen shot for P. I’m assuming the bay curved, or else you were at sea?

Thanks Bee! The phone camera is a remarkable step up. It certainly means I don’t have to think about taking a “proper” camera out with me everywhere every time I got out, although clearly it has some limitations. For general shots, including wide angle it’s perfect.
The P shot, yes I was stood in the edge of the shore, so a slight curve.

2 good shots Simon. Thats a lot of money to spend on a phone, but not so much for a decent camera.

Pete

Thanks Pete - yes, sadly they're not cheap, but I got a bit of a trade in on my iPhone XR, so the pain was lessened a little. I'm chuffed with the quality of the images from it though.

Looks like you’re going to have lots of fun with the new phone Simon. I love the sky on the first one.

Both good and show off this phone's ability. Do you process in LR etc. or are they straight out of the phone?

Thanks Peter.
I might do some editing using the iPhones own editing capability, or export and PP I. Photoshop Elements. Occasionally use Snapseed on the phone.
These though are straight out of camera.

Some great pier shots from your camera and equally good from the new phone. Love the drama in those clouds.
I only got a new phone because it came with a recommended camera - hardly ever use a mobile for calls :)

Thanks Helen. I’m loving the camera on the phone.

Week 26 - One Half

One interesting, and largely irrelevant point on these three shots - they were all taken with a different camera.

Generally though, you've posted some lovely and clever pictures in this thread Simon :D
