Many years ago when Adam was a lad you could buy a prepaid simm card for about £10 with x no of minutes which lasted ages provided you made a call every so often, about every couple of months from memory.
I am looking for one to put in an old phone to leave in the car in case of emergencies , the reason being I went out yesterday , forgot my phone and it dawned on me if I broke down or had a mishap I could not contact anyone
Does anyone know if these still exist are are they all on a pay monthly basis and only last a month?

GiffGaff sims keep credit for 6 months after their last use, that would probably do you. Phone would need to be on 02 or unlocked.

I had that with Tesco but they stopped doing it, i now have a Tesco prepaid sim and ring my other phone every month, i just answer the other phone and then cut it off, kept it going for years now, cost is pence a month.

I'm on O2 Classic PAYG, top up tenner at a time, doesn't expire as long as you use the phone at least once every six months
  • Calls are 3p a minute.
  • Texts are 2p.
  • Data is 1p a MB.
  • Calls to customer service are free of charge
  • Calls to Voicemail are 3p a call.
Not sure if its still available, if not might be able to find some new SIM cards for sale somewhere

The stopped being sold in O2 shops in September 2019. They were available online and over the phone for a while after, but were discontinued a long time ago.

thanks everyone , I will investigate all of these further.

Quite a few still on eBay although I cannot speak to their authenticity

I don’t think you need credit to dial 999, though the sim does need to be active.

I don't think you even need a sim to dial 999/911/112 etc.
I was told sims remain live until first used, then the countdown starts. X months after their last use, the sim is deactivated, credit is lost, and the number recycled.

AsdaMobile requires only a chargeable event every 180 days (or did when I picked mine up about 12 months ago) still have £4.80 of the original £5 credit. SIM was 50p I think, might have been 99 though

Edit: 180 days not 90

I recently bought a roaming sim - that isn't tied to any network for my home alarm system - it will always connect to the strongest local operator wherever you are - and the credit doesn't run out ever - as long as you make one chargeable use every twelve months. I've had it up and running since March, and have watched the credit - and it's only dropped when I've triggered the house alarm (a couple of times) and the alarm phones me to tell me that I'm robbing my own house, and not to be so silly.

The card was about £8 posted - and then I added a £10 credit - and I'm still on about £8.50 even though it texts me and calls me each time I forget to disarm a zone.

If you're just looking to keep a connection - and not use it regularly - and to not worry about which network is strongest - then this is one to certainly consider (the sim card is the usual 3 different sizes in one type).

Yeah those are spot on. Manx telecom used to do the same thing which is why I got one for my emergency phone.

Combine with a £10 Nokia with a battery that lasts weeks and can be run off Aas in s pinch.
