Not sure if this is the right place to ask but....

I got directed here from the BTCC forum, and I was looking for any advice as to good spots for photography at the Silverstone Circuit, as I have not visited before.

If it helps I only have a Nikon compact with 3x optical zoom, so I need to be fairly close to the track, preferably with no fence in the way ;)

TIA

Rich.

It depends when you're going tbh. On an official race meeting there's only one or two places you can get without fences in the way. Very hard to describe them here though (Joe T can you help with this one?). However, if you go to a test day it's a different matter. There's almost no officials there and you can get right up to the fences and get your lens through a gap. Round by the Luffield complex you'll often see guys with their cameras through or over the fences, there's a couple of prime spots there. Of course if you have a press pass ;) ......

Silverstone is the worst track for photography I've visited.

The best place (depending on which circuit they are using) is the Club straight or the National straight (both pretty much at the same place). You can get on the inside here. Basically walk down the long run way from copse corner (away from the paddock) and you're there. There a resaonably good stretch with no fences. However, the track itself isnt all that interesting, but then again Silverstone is a bit like that!

You can occasionally get a good shot from the grandstands at the start finish straight, but it's not easy. The only oves I've got from there have had to have fences cloned out of them

I took this at the Luffeield Complex this was on the spectator terrace with a Nikon Compact 5.1MP with 3x optical zoom. You may be lucky with a bit of cropping, but if the terrace is packed you will struggle for position.

Thanks for the replies, I had heard that Silverstone wasn't the best place for photography.

Still it should be an interesting weekends racing :)

Well I found out that :-

Becketts is ok, but the sun was low in the sky in the afternoon.

Halfway down the national straight you can get very close to the cars, but they're doing 100+mph at that point and my poor camera couldn't cope with that sort of speed. Mind you, my brain was struggling at that point too :)

Luffield was ok for some action shots of two or more cars, although it was a problem trying to stop the top of the fence from becoming the focal point!

Got some shots from the banking next to the Pedestrian and Vehicle bridges though.

Sound like you had a pretty good day! Are you gonna post some shots for us to see?

Just a couple of shots, the first of which shows what sort of weekend I had as far as photography was concerned. I finally get something in focus, well what I can see of the car seems to be in focus, hehe ;) : -

Only other picture I got of any note was this one of James Thompson, taken from just before the vehicle bridge, it's not perfect, think it's time to start looking at a DSLR for next season : -
