Anyone going to Silverstone for the MotoGp weekend after next I will be there trying to get some shots will be there at racing event prior to that as well that a friend is racing in so hopefully get some good bike shots. I will upload any pictures I get as soon as I can just so busy with work and stuff I don't have time to put any on here as such an also new to the site so working my way round it all as well.

Read in MCN this week that they're charging £25 to park for the weekend £10 Saturday and £15 for Sunday but there is an off site park and ride available for £2.50.

How far out is the park and ride just thinking carrying equipment etc although I only plan on going for one day so don't mind paying if need be, thanks for that information Chris. I was trying to remember how much parking was last time I was there back in early May.

I used to go every year but just can't justify the cost now

I'm going to try and shoot track days and lesser meets, far cheaper and just as much action, if not more!

No idea how far away the park and ride is, the last time I went to a Moto GP at Silverstone Randy Mamola was on the podium. I find BSB far better value, good racing great action and the whole weekend ticket is around £30 depending on the circuit.

I'm going for the weekend. It's my first time taking a camera as I've only just started in photography so a complete virgin to the Motorsport photography! Here's hoping I can get some semi decent shots!

guys I live in Towcester the main town next to Silverstone(3 miles)
there is a park and ride at the horse racing track and drop off is at main gate for the circuit
if this helps

I'll be going on the Saturday just to take some shots really, any idea what length of lens is going to get me close enough to get a decent shot. Ticket is £35pp and £10 to park the car, which is probably more than I used to pay in the days of Sheene and Roberts on race day :)
General admission allows roving Grandstand access, not all, mostly up the pit lane end of the track, but I guess grandstand seats will be a mile from the track?
Probably end up near the fencing, is that practical?
Still, looking forward to it whatever its like on the day.

Matt

Got these full frame with a 300mm f2.8 and 2x TC at Beckets on a 1D

It depends where you go on the track and whether you don't mind cropping into your image, but 300mm minimum, but more likely 300-500mm is required.

Thanks Pete, looks like the 70-200 & 2x on my FF is going to produce a spec in the distance, might ask my son to bring back my 1D in that case.

Matt
PS cant see your images at work, will check at home later.

I was in the International Pit Straight grandstand last year, bagged a seat first thing, one of the closest grandstands to the track action, although this year they are starting around at the old pitlane, so this might be a little quieter.

This is with a 300mm DX lens (and plenty of cropping). I don't favour any longer than 300mm because with motor-racing you do want to be able to zoom out at times, couldn't have got this all in without zooming back to 70mm.

Looks Like no access to the "inside" of the track. Therefore the spot between Stowe & Vale where you can easily get pictures over the fence with most lenses is out of bounds !

Hmmm... I'm sitting at Silverstone Six for the event and was rather hoping to get down to the fence at the Arena curves during the racing for some fency close-ups. I wonder if this will be blocked off?

Seems odd to close-off the infield near the Wing since the paddock there is not in use.

Most of the infield was closed at WSB and also at BSB as they wont pay security to patrol all of the infield so its easier to just seal it off,it was luck of the draw if you got passed and managed to get a few pictures.
We even got challenged at BSB last year even though we had media passes at one point and I also got chucked out the infield this year at WSB on raceday despite having an organisers pass for grid and pit a it didn't include trackside.

I'll be there. I never made it round to Becketts last year but I'll be at teh track for all 3 days so should make it there at some point.

As I have time on my side, I'll wander over to the Wing to see if there is any infield access, on the off-chance as I never made it there last year either. There's a spot on the inside of Brookland where a different type of fence is used and you can focus through the gap. I got my best shots from there last year. I was using a 100-400 and 70-200 last year (hired and shared between two of us).

This year I'll have a 70-200 on a 7D with a 1.4x extender which I'm hoping will give enough reach for the bikes. It was fine for the F1 test I went to a few weeks ago, so hopefully it'll be ok for bikes. I'm already resigned to the fact I'll be cropping my shots though.

70-200 for bikes? At Sillystone?

I normally (from trackside!) shoot 500mm for that place...

I got shots I was happy with using the 70-200 2.8 last year without an extender. This year I'll have a 70-200 f4 with an extender so I'm 50:50 whether I'll get anything I'm happy with.

It's the 1st time shooting bikes at Silverstone with my own gear, having rented lenses last year. If the focal length isn't enough, then I know my shopping list for next year will be either a 100-400, a 70-300l or a Sigma 150-500.

I'm happy to crop the 18mp 7D images, so we'll see what I end up with.

I just looked through my shots from last year and checked those in the 200mm-280mm range. They were sufficiently close enough that I'd be happy with cropping an 18mp shot to get a decent final image. Obviously 400mm would be better but want to make the most of the kit I own this time round rather than hiring.

I'll be in the Becketts grandstand tomorrow, I might even take my camera

I ended up going on Friday and Sunday, leaving Saturday to rest at home. Overall I'm happy with many of the shots I got but the biggest frustration is a lack of sharpness in a lot of my shots.

I'll put this down to the fact that at 280mm (200 + 1.4x extender) I'm having to crop quite a bit and have less pixel real estate to play with on the subjects in shot.

Anyhoo, here are a few from Friday. I've got some more from Sunday from the inside of Brooklands to sort thru then I'll post.
