If it's just for shooting the racing, you need as much length as you can get at Silverstone. Big fences, large gravel traps and huge crowds are not helpful!

If it was me I would probably only take the camera on Friday, thats what I did last year.

There was plenty of space around, not to many people and you could move around pretty freely even with a longer lens. I would probably choose the 70-200.

It might be even busier this year though, with it being the 'last' one there.

I've got a grandstand seat, would I get away with swinging a 100-400 or am I wasting my time?

Also what's a good time to get there on Sunday and what's the traffic like?

I've got a 2 hour drive from Bournemouth so not sure whether it's a night before jobby or stay over. I think I'm only going for the Sunday, got the tickets through work (corporate hospitality stuff) but not received them yet.

I looked into going just on the Friday - £49!!!! Stuff that. Anyone who pays that needs their head examining.

I wouldnt bother I dont think.

If you have got a grandstand seat then obviously you dont need to be there crazy early to find a perch but I am planning on staying over the night before as the traffic is annoying to say the least on the sunday morning.

You wont find any hotel or anything to stay in now though.

I am going this year and ive got a 70-200mm f/2.8 with a TC-14E and TC-17E, you will more than likely find that the prices just for a couple of days are almost the same price as for a weeks hire, It costed me £130 for a weeks hire inc delivery of the above from lensesforhire.co.uk

If you havent got a media pass then I would seriously consider not even taking a camera! Just enjoy the racing! There are very places to shoot the track at Silverstone, and it will be crazy busy. Long lenses in crowds wont make you popular either! :)

This advice is very good.

To be honest you're not going to get those super glossy magazine shots from the crowd, so why not just kick back and enjoy the ridiculously expensive ticket you've paid for?

I have only gone on Fridays with a friend from POTN, as this seems to be the best for photography. Get the longest lens you can get your hands on. It is true the photos aren't going to be magazine style however that may not be your plan.

In regards to Traffic, they put in a new road network a few years back but even on fridays its manic! Give yourself plenty of time!!! In the old days it was common for people to walk 10-15miles.

I would offer my house that is just around the corner from Silverstone but don't think parents would be that happy! :)

got a B&B up the road so traffic isnt a problem :D. I am going all 3 days and the idea is to shoot on friday and maybe saturday then watch the race on the sundy.

Without media access Stalag Silverstone is useless. Dont bother. Sit back and enjoy the race. The sooner the BRDC gets kicked into touch the better I say. The place needs proper media centre and decent renovations all round. The clubhouse is great (and the roof is great to shoot from) but limited to BRDC members only (and those with mates in it ;) )
