I`m going down tomorrow for the FOC trackday,at short notice. I have only been once before a while back, where are the best places to go for shots and what sort of focal length is needed please?

TIA.

Focal length - As long as you can get, you're a hell of a long way away from the track at most places at Silverstone. Shooting positions depends which circuit is being used. If you can fine that out I'll gladly give some advice on where is good.

Worth taking the 300-800 then?

I`ll find out which circuit is being used and revert, thanks for taking the time to help.........

Hi Mate

Yeah, it is worth knowing which circuit they will be using. I'm guessing it will be the National Circuit. In that case from the inside of the National Straight (I think it's called) is the best place to shoot from. There arent that many good places at Silverstone due to the fences. The outside of Luffield from the terraces can be good too.

What shorter lenses than the 300-800 have you got?

If they're on the National circuit that will probably be a bit too long. If the International or GP circuit is being used I'd take it along (with something shorter as well), it may well come in handy

Thanks fellas,i`ll take the 80-400 and my 300 as well.Just asked which circuit,so should get an answer back soon.

Most people are very critical of silverstone, and i can understand why, however there is the possibility of getting some excellent pictures. The biggest problem I find is that I have to stand right next to the fence in order to get the camera to focus through it, which is somewhat restricting.

The longest lens I have is 200mm yet some of the best motorsport pictures i have taken have been at that track. Pictures from Abbey, Bridge, luffield and Priory usually fall within my 200mm range. "Standard" pan shots from the straight after the exit of club are usually possible too. Copse, maggotts, becketts and chappel will probably require in excess of 300mm as would stow, vale and most of club. The back straight between becketts and farm could also be good for 200-250mm, particularly at the chicane nearer the becketts end. I have never shot anything on the national circuit, except around luffield, so would have to bow to the experience of others on that. I would also concider taking something much smaller for pit and paddock area shots.

With some creativity and an 80-400mm you could achieve good shots from most places. Hope that helps. Good luck and I hope the weather holds good.

When we went a few years ago we parked up in a carpark just over one of the bridges. It gave views of one of the tracks (sorry I can't be more accurate than that) which had quite a good amount of clearance from the fencing as it was much higher than the track. It was a British Touring cars practice day I think, and people were free to roam without much restriction  I was using my Kodak P&S at the time and was getting relatively close shots at 60mm.

Thanks for the help all.

It is the full GP circuit i`m led to believe, but looking at the forecast for the weather,it may be a non-starter..........
