Silverfast 8 SE Plus so slow scanning slides

Hi all

I have just picked up a Plustek 8200i to scan my collection of 35mm Slides and Negatives, the scanner came with Silverfast 8 SE Plus software which I have been trying to use and although I am getting good results I am finding it very slow going with it taking over 10 minutes to do one Hi Res scan.

From what I have been able to figure out is the reason it is so slow is because of the way it implements the iR Dust removal.

First a high res preview is done, then you tell it you want to use IR dust removal so it does another hi res scan to work out where the dust is, then it does another hi res scan then it does the proper hi res iR scan then it fixes the scan to remove the dust, which is taking a long time to work through my slides.

If I use Vuescan it does the scans to the same resolution in under 5 minutes because it only does 2 hi res scans, one of the slide and one iR scan.

Anyone know if it's possible within Silverfast to get it to automatically select iR dust removal so removing the pre iR scan thus speeding up the process.

I am now sticking to Vuescan because it is so much quicker but would appreciate being able to use some of the many adjustment options wishing Silverfast if only I could get it to scan as quick as Vuescan.

Anyone managed to do this or know if it is actually possible with Silverfast.

Thanks for any help with this

Paul

Sorry, cant help Silverfast nearly sent me insane, it came with my v750 and I very quickly ditched it for Vuescan. I certainly would be doing multi scans of all my negs and slides. I do a reasonable scan the do a multi pass scan for anything important.

Paul, if you stick with SF8 you'll be the resident expert, as AFAIK no-one else has carried on using it. I used SF6 until I came across Vuescan Pro, which does as good a job more simply (it is less powerful, but generally not where it matters). The killer is SF8 will only ever work with precisely that one scanner, Vuescan will work with almost any scanner ever made, including (probably) the scanner in your all-in-one printer-scanner, and the one you get when you're tempted by Medium Format, and the one for Large Format, and...

I know what you are saying and just about everyone else who has written a comment on Silverfast as well, I just don't like to be beaten by a bit of software, it's just so dammed slow compared to Vuescan, just wish Vuescan had a few more tweaks in its interface, still I suppose in the time it saves me a few minutes extra in Photoshop will still be a winner.

Also I cannot believe that in a bit of software that costs what Silverfast does that they have removed the 48bit option just to force you to buy their HDR version or the even more expensive Ai version, just to get back basic 48bit scanning.

Tells you all you need to know, really. They're not on your side!

Silverfast isn't even worth the time it took me to write this sentence. Vuescan is the only way forward.

:D Silverfast must be one of the most unfriendly program I've come across and gave up also.
