I know some lenses come with tripod rings, and you seem to be able to get them for other lenses or at least fleabay seems to sell them, but at what point would you attach the lens to the tripod rather than the camera - or do you just attach the camera unless the lens has a ring?

ideally you want the tripod at the centre of gravity

if you put a (physically) small lens on the camera, then the CofG doesn't move that much

when you put a camera on a large drainpipe of a lens, the CofG is well forward of the camera - hence the tripod ring

it's never 100% as the act of focusssing moves the glass about a bit anyway

that's the theory

That does make sense - so in simplistic terms a physically short heavy lens is less likely to need one than a longer lens of the same weight - thanks

When your using a stonking huge lens? ie. 500mm +
Well thats not likely to happen in the near future unless I win the lottery!!
