How do you all decide what to take photos of? I am stuggling all the photos I have taken seem to be of animals in a zoo, which is fine but i dont want that to be all I use the camera for. How do you find the places in some of these photos I have seen on here.
What is the best time of day to go out and take thses photos as well?

hi
I have problems as well wondering what to take. Unfortunately I dont live near a zoo but at the seaside so I go down there and take pics. Go for a drive on the moors or hills if you have them near you, I do that as well. Or objects in your house/ garden. Just a few suggestions but I struggle as well :(

I take inspiration from the other photos that get posted. My photos were always motorsport orientated, Now I'm trying my best to broaden my subjects. A lot of it can be something you find interesting or unusual.

Hi Sue,

Not really a silly question at all! I would suggest doing some searching for tutorials on composition first of all so try and see why you like the photos that you do. Then try to emulate them.

Also look through the Tutorials section on this site - if nothing else, the threads there might give you the inspiration to find different things to take photos of, different techniques to try and so on.

Good Luck

Anything. Anytime. Anywhere. :)

I steal ideas from other people :)

Me too sometimes. Sometimes, Im 'in the zone' and I just 'see' photographs everywhere...although that's quite rare.

Other times, I stop and think and actively think about and look for photographs from where I'm stood.

Other times, I nick ideas from other people. Some people call it stealing...I like to think of it as 'creative augmentation'.

Yep, me too, I steal ideas, try and copy the exact landscape sometimes....but mainly a take shots of everything and anything....which is all too easy with a digital.
I've got dates set when certain images will be possible,...and ive even started to try and match low tides with sunrises or sunsets.

I also find the Fortnightly themes and competition very useful to get me to try something else... but saying that, its not really the subject that makes the photo, some of the guys here can make the simplest of shots into a master piece, its there skill with the composition and camera that makes the difference.

Oh and welcome Sue.

You could try thinking of other hobbies/interests/work to take pics of.
I began by taking pics of hands & nails but Ive just got myself a macro lens so now all the garden critters suddenly seem interesting.
Im also leaning toward a lens for landscapes.

Get a map and look around your local area for events, places of interest, beauty spots. I take the family wandering across a wood close to us which is great for exploring and has some fantastic views.

Sometimes pictures just pop out at you and other times it's not until you get home and upload them that you realise what worked and what didn't. Trial and error, take pictures of everything and take your camera with you wherever you go!

No such thing as a silly question on here Sue :)
I often have spells where I just don't know what to photograph, but then I'll go somewhere without the camera and see loads of things that would have made lovely shots :bang: There's lots of inspiration on here - just looking at other people's shots often gives me ideas, and as mentioned already, the fortnightly themes etc. Try looking in your local library or a 2nd hand bookshop for photography books. I've got some good ones with lots of ideas and suggestions in.

Sue, as Mini says no such thing as a silly question.
Me I like to look for something different something odd. I love to wonder around my local country park or if I'm up with my folks to walk along the beach. Or take myself off to Brands Hatch for some motorsport.

Try different things go to different places like a country park, Places Of Interest, go up to London there's always something going on up there one way or another.

Hope that helps

No such thing as a silly Q ever......:)

It's a question everyone asks themselves after a while.

I've been struggling for ideas and inspiration for a month or so now :(

i think I will steal ideas from other people as well, as I am really struggling at moment :(

take inspiration from others, and go to the zoo. Ive not taken a pic in anger for some time, got over 300 today!

okay so heres one for you

How do you go about taking pictures of strangers? how to you approach them or do you just snap away, smile and walk on?

Diego Garcia is your man for that question - he's done some fab street shots. I usually snap from a distance so the person is completely unaware ;)

another idea to add to those listed above, if you read photography magazines is to take photos to match up their PotY comps - even if you don't enter the pics it could give you some inspiration...
