Yes
I enjoy getting out for a run on the local hills and moorland. There are times when a camera would have been handy to snap the views to put in my running blog. AND when I'm out walking the dog in the mornings, there is the odd occasion when a lightweight camera would have been handy. I don't have a mobile phone but would love to have one to take the odd photo when I'm out. DAFT QUESTION COMING! What would suit my needs and can I use a mobile to take images only and still download them onto my computer? Sorry for being stupid but you have always come good with your expert knowledge.

A mobile would and could but quality low! How about a GH 4 or a go pro?

You could use a mobile with no sim card in it and just use it that way. You would probably get better value from a compact camera though.
I think I've got an old Nikon compact somewhere, I'll give it a go. Used my wife's mobile in the lake district and it seemed to give me that wide angle I was looking for. Cheers.

Please, do not encourage him to live in his own cocoon. He is marginally older than me, time he discovered a mobile phone, he may actually even need the thing at some point.

@mossienet. Get a bleeding phone and if you must have a small camera too.

God, some people have to be kicked up the rear end to wake up

I don't think it's anyone else's place to say whether or not someone needs a mobile phone or not.

Yes, you can use a mobile phone as just a camera and upload when you're connected to a wifi signal.
Wi Fi signal? That is all too technical for me. I can download when I choose and I connect the phone to the computer (laptop in this instance) to charge it.

Keep it simple please :-)

As an alternative to a mobile phone, you could buy an Apple iPod instead as that's basically the iPhone without the phone part so will be cheaper.

I know and I know I am being "impolite" and I did not put ten smileys at the end. But I also read what he wrote :-) I will live with my impoliteness ... BTW. I did not mean to be offensive or impolite to you!

You may not be in a rush but charging from the laptop will take a lot longer than using the supplied mains plug charger.

I don't have a mobile because I don't need one. Not working, retired etc etc. Only time I use an old Nokia is when my wife is away and she wants to tell me how things are. Why spend a fortune on something I don't want or need. I do get wee wee'd off with the amount of time people spend using them to see if someone has sent them a message or not. They are EXTREMELY useful for emergencies etc and I wouldn't dream of telling someone else not to have one. And RELAX.

Do you drive? What happens if the car breaks down.
You go for a walk/run etc. What happens if you hurt yourself (I do not assume worse than that as in that case the phone becomes irrelevant).
What if your wife A.N.Other need to call you because they have a problem (like the examples above).

You can choose how much you want to spend (and I mainly agree with you about not needing the phone all the time to see facebook and whatever else). It is the cost of buying the phone, the connection can be cheap. So it is a phone/camera versus pocket camera. Your call :D My original comment was light hearted but it worked like a brick :dummy:

How about something like an Olympus TG-5 - tough, waterproof and with GPS to remind you where you took the photo. No worry about if you drop it in the mud, etc.

Or if you’re flush a Leica X-U

Well I haven't! :p
Jeez. Am I the only modern old codger here? Maybe I should go and get some expired film and resurrect the Mamiya and the Weston Euromaster and then scan the films on a flat bed scanner to make them crap enough and post the images here.

In my case I just picked up a second hand point and shoot camera - a Canon Powershot S95 in my case. Cheap as chips, weighs next to nothing and takes reasonably good images.

Just gear for when I don't want 30+lbs on my back!

Does this Canon Powershot (sounds so American) thing take film or is it one of these modern things like facebook and t***ter, digital whatsits. If it does not use film you are in the wrong thread.

What is your budget? A Sony RX100 would be a great option.

Yes you should be able to take pictures with a smartphone without SIM. FWIW the Nokia Lumia range was supposed to have a good camera in it and can be picked up relatively cheaply now.

I have an iPhone and it does a great job as well, but it would be wasted if you were not going to use it as a phone.

I remember the days where only ONE person on the street had a phone and you "got" news of a birth/death with a telegram lad delivering it on a bike. Thanks everyone, you've made me smile.
Re emergencies etc, I totally agree. Sal takes her phone with her when we go out, when I remember to remind her. Out running ... I always tell her where I'm going and the ETA. Must remember to make a tag for my shoes with telephone etc on, been meaning to do that for a while. Thanks for "jogging" my memory.

Bought one for my wife and she never uses it now. BUT, she knows if I've taken it out. It's some sort of radar she has had installed.

& that's for something that probably isn't that important ................. just don't try it with a pair of her shoes! :bat: :D

Did I write this :D

I have a PAYG mobile and although I take it almost everywhere I hardly ever use it, it takes quite poor pictures though.

Hope you get a compact or decent phone camera sorted :D

Get yourself a little Sony RX100 mk 1. Possibly the best image quality you can get in such a small package, smaller than my phone. Took mine around the world sat in my front pocket :) One of the many images shot with the little powerhouse...

Eh? Facebook and Twitter aren't cameras.

Not sure if trolling...
