Hi
this maybe a really silly question but...
why do external flashguns flash twice, why is it noticeable sometimes and not others. is it JUST for red eye reduction.

Could someone please explain.

Thanks:thinking:

eTTL flashes work by firing a pre-flash which the camera uses to calculate the correct power required, then the main flash fires after.

Normally this happens very quickly so you don't notice it but if you use 2nd-curtain sync in a dark room then you've got a whole exposure time between them. Similarly if you use the AE-lock button it fires the pre-flash but the photographer can the recompose and the main flash fires with the shutter release.

Nikon D90 set on manual and the pop up flash used, fires three flashes. the first two are preflash. Fit a Nikon external flash set to manual with the camera still on manual it fires only one flash. Life gets tedious don`t it.

thanks, i never really noticed until i was DJing at the local RBL awards night and i was watching the photographer.

It looked like a cheap, tatty old camera, it was an...erm...nikon i think!

.....don't hit me!
