I have just borrowed a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
yet I am confused it just seems to automatically zoom with the cheaper lens I have you twist the lens to change the distance on this beast it soesnt seem to matter if i twist it or not.

I know I sound very technical here lol but I am so confused and more importantly I dont want to break it it is very expensive!!!

am i missing something fundemental?

The design is the older telescopic way of zooming a lens. I actually prefer it because you can manual focus AND zoom at the same time. To zoom you literally just pull it out or push it in.

The 100-400 is a push pull lens, like a trombone. There is a lock which adjusts the friction (labelled as such, next to the rubber covered focus ring.)

There is the focus ring, then there is a smaller ring which changes the resistance on the push pull zoom

You may need to 'unlock' the zoom with the smaller ring before it will work.

Nostalgic for a "proper" zoom:
