High guys, a quick question.

Do you have to sign up to yahoo mail to have a flicker account?

And can you recommend any tips for getting the best from flicker?

Any comments appreciated.

Cheers all.

If you use BT Broadband as your ISP, then Flickr is free and you use your existing BT e-mail address.

Otherwise, yes you need a Yahoo ID (e-mail address) to sign up.

As far as I am aware, sign up for one and you sign up for both. You dont have to use both of course!
I use Yahoo anyway, both as a home page and email client (webmail)
You get 100mg per month dowload, and you can have up to 200 images on your Flikr for free. If you want more then you have to go pro for $24.95 per anum.

To get the best from Flickr use it as a social network and photography resource combined.

Thanks guys. I can imagine that there are plenty of people on here who go over their 200 photo's? Is it worth paying extra for? I know a good friend of mine has had some nice pay outs off the back of it.

How will networking on flicker help me in any way? Just by putting me in touch with like minded dudes?

I've been using Flickr for quite a while now, I remember I signed up to a Yahoo mail address, but then changed my details to use my main GMail account.

It's a great resource for sharing your photos, getting comments from others and also accessing your photos from elsewhere (plus a backup if you have a pro account to get full res pics).

I am going to be upgrading my Flickr free account to a Pro account next year because I will be doing a 365 project (a photo a day for a year) and because I currently have 181 photos uploaded at the moment, I am very close to the limit.

Having a pro account also enables you to have unlimited uploads, the ability to sort sets into collections, display full size photos and view photo stats (plus some other factors which I can't think of from the top of my head now, but those are the major points anyway.)

It also comes in handy as a rudimentary backup system, good for archiving lots of old photos and scanned negatives. The pro account is really worth it. Such a minimal cost too it's hardly noticeable over the course of a year.

The only thing that bugs me is the lack of development on Flickr. It's always looked the same for as long as I can remember.

I'm fortunate in that I get a free pro account with by BT email address. I certainly wouldn't pay for it though, it's not really to my taste. I only use for simplicities sake because everyone else does. See how you get on with the free account and if you really like it spend the money on going pro.

Oh, and of course being able to set viewing permissions comes in handy. You've got a lot of control over how your images are viewed on Flickr.

I just joind Flickr and uploaded a few pics ( a few weeks ago now ). Im not sure if i have set the permissions properly as my pics dont get much viewing at all and even less comments--good or bad. Maybe someone can tell me if i have everything set correctly or not.

I've had a flick through your stuff on Flickr and you've got some cracking pictures on there but I noticed that none of then appear to be in any group pools. If they are not in any group pools people will have to stumble across them or notice them because you are a contact. If you look at some of the most commented images on Flickr you'll see that they are generally in multiple pools.

Once people get to know your work you'll find that more people will look when you upload.

Don't expect to get negative comments though as Flickr can be a bit sycophantic with no one posting negative.

One other thing I've noticed is that your account is set to allow your images to be downloaded. I don't know if you can do it without a pro account but try going to the your account settings and under privacy and permisssions there is an option to limit who can download.

there's about 5000 pictures go on flickr per minute. Very few people will just happen to stumble across your page. Like Mike says, if you want some visits find some groups to add to. Also talk to some other people, give them some feedback on their work. Maybe they'll reciprocate.

dunno whether it's me but when it comes to general usability and such i find flickr pants, i've gone back to it a couple of times but it's really just not captured my interest :/

I use Flickr a fair bit , its not perfect but it suits my needs for now , I post a lot of stuff that only family can view , my sister does the same so we can view each others photos of the kids etc , this works very well for us

I agree with what others have said regarding posting your shots into group pools for a bit more exposure (pun intended !) however you will very rarely get negative comments and god help you if you leave neg comments for anyone else !

Flickr probably isn't the best tool for getting useful crit on you photos but its a good way of viewing/sharing them

Interesting points. I have a mate who has a big following, im not sure if hes in any groups though.
Hes had his photos on the main explore pages, so hes had plenty of hits. How he got them there, I shall have to ask.

Cheers.

Just to clarify. You can upload as many photos as you want without a pro account, but only the latest 200 will appear in your photo stream.

I found that joining& posting to groups has made all the difference! I have even started my own group which has 14 members in 24hrs! I LOVE Flickr!!

The biggest drawback to Flickr is it doesn't have a sensible directory file structure you have to copy some unintelligble URL all the time rather than flickr.com/fredbloggs/2009hols/Img_0027.jpg for example

i thought as long as you credit flickr with the download, ie have it in your signature, you can use the short version. which is just what you said. thats what i do no problems so far. just use the second link not the first hth mike

Thanks very much, the info about groups is good and i will look into it. I see your point about not getting critisism when requird on Flickr as i hadnt noticed that before you said it.I will have a look at the permissions as well. Thanks for your help folks.

also add lots of tags to your pics so other peeps find them in searchs

Interesting as i had considered as another back up plan, what's the draw backs?

Kris

I use flickr to get people to give feedbacks on my shots..and by looking at other people's photos, it helps me to learn and improve..well, not only from the photos, there are also some group discussions which helped me decided on which equipment to buy, etc..

flickr is worth joining :D

Another thumb up for Flickr. Also quite useful as a research tool if you are visiting somewhere that you haven't been before. Normally some on Flickr will have :D

What about your files thought? How do you stop some one pinching them?

Also, what kind of file/size do you all put up? My mate says he uses a low res image, but how is the best way of doing this? Do you resize in PS, if so whats a good size?

Sorry if im asking the basics.....

Cheers.

One other major difference between the Free and Pro accounts is that on the Free version, it will only display your image to a max of 1024pix on the long edge, it does its own re-size.

The only thing that bugs me is the lack of development on Flickr. It's always looked the same for as long as I can remember.

There is the good old saying

If it ain't broke' don't fix it

There are far to many sites that change just for the fun of change.
Back to the OP, If you want lots of comments on your photos then join LOTS for groups' for example a photo of Windermere could be in some of the following groups (and I'm sure there are many more)

Canon DSLR User Group (Pool)
Canon EOS 30D (Pool)
Canon EF-S 17-55mm 2.8 IS USM Lens (Pool)
UK Flickr users (Pool)
Lake District, UK (Pool)
Beautiful Britain (Pool)
A Picture of Britain (Pool)
This Is England (Pool)
UK, PHOTO GALLERY. (Pool)
Cumbria - The Beautiful Landscapes (Pool)
