I am just getting started to wildlife photography and I am also going on safari for my honeymoon so have been looking for a Sigma 150-500 as it seems to be a good starting point for someone on a budget. I have just found a Sigma 120-400 second hand tho and have not done much research on this lens. Does anybody know if this is a good lens. Is the extra 100 mm worth the extra money for the 150-500 or would the 120-400 be more than good enough? Thanks for any help.

Have a search for some very similar threads on here to the one you pose

The 120-400 is a fantastic lens, I really regret selling mine.
The OS works really well, I was shooting hand held at 1/40th at 400mm and getting pin sharp photos.

Cant comment on the 150-500, but I used to have a 50-500 and the 120-400 beats it in every way.

Thats great, thanks for the replys. I have looked at the 70-200 but even second hand its still a bit out of my price range. I can get ba 150-500 for around £500 second hand or 120-400 for about £450. Decision now is whether the extra range is worth the extra £50?

How did it do in low light at full stretch?
I was leaning towards the 120-400 but having seen some of the shots from a 150-500 - admittedly in good light - it looks hard to ignore. I'm more interested in mamals than birds and most of them don't move quite so fast, especially me.

Robin, What you said about the 150-500 ( Its hard to ignore ) is why I keep coming back to it.
