I am in need of a 70-200 f2.8 pretty soon, and i cant afford a Canon 70-200 just yet (i would go for a f4 but feel ill need f2.8 really)

I have heard about a few people having front focus issues with the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 and have heard people rave on about the Tamron 17-50 and 28-75.

So can anyone tell me about the Tamron 70-200 and is it better then the Sigma version?

Mike

sorry to sound dumb here but what does f 2.8 mean. sorry im new to this.
sorry for highjacking your thread without helping you out :bonk:

dan, f2.8 is the maximum aperture of the lens. F2.8 is a relatively wide aperture - lenses like this tend to cost a bit more than your average lens (very generalised!)

Mike, I think there's not a lot in it. I dont think the Tamron has a built in focus motor though? Which means it is likely to focus slower and louder.

There's a side by side of these 2 in Amature Photographer 30th Aug issue, think the Siggy just comes out on top,if you PM me your details i'll send you the article if you like:thumbs:

rgb are currently selling the latest version of the sigma F/2.8 with free EX 2xTC for £619, just to let you know ;)

Alright guys

Thanks for all your help

I just read this review that was posted in the "Sony Alpha" Thread http://www.ephotozine.com/article/Tamron-70-200mm-f28-Di-LD-IF-Macro

This has done nothing to sway me from buying this lens, i need a 70-200 f2.8 asap for a job early december and have no chance of being able to afford a Canon 07-200 f2.8. I was nearly going to buy a 70-200 f4 but i think for the job and for the future, i will need a f2.8 (weddings etc) telephoto.
I understand that the focusing is slower then others in its class but at the price i cant complain, and also it does state that its no slouch, maybe its just slower compared to the other 70-200's but not that slow.

I did consider renting, but since the job im doing cant guarantee that ill make enough to cover the rental costs, and the fact ill have to give it back and have nothing to show for my cash, it has really put me in the mind of buying now and paying off over the next couple of months.

I take it no-one has any real experience with the Tamron lens?

Might have a look around and see if i can get a good copy second hand :)

The Tamron one certainly looks the part and from what I've read in mags and on the web, it's a very capable alternative for those who don't want to spend the extra £200 on the Nikon version (the 80-200mm and NOT the 70-200mm VR).

I've got the Sigma, as it was the only alternative at the time (I got it for just over £400 from Jessops brand new) and it is a fantastic lens; bulid quality is exclelent, focussing is super-fast and all in all, it delivers great results...

... apart from the fact it back focuses like nothing on earth!! It's currently at Sigma for re-calibration, so hopefully that'll rectify problems. I don't know if the Tamron suffers similar problems. This wouldn't put me off buying Sigma in the future though - I'd just make sure I checked it more thoroughly next time.

Sakura, do you find that the focus on the sigma is slow. Its just im either going for one of those second hand or the canon f4 non is new. Its mainly to shoot kitesurfing

yeah of course, to be honest i dont really need the 2.8 but its always nice to have....

Ordered the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 Second hand in mint condition from Aperture Uk yesterday (Thanks to the list of second hand places in the sales section), arrived today before 9am. £350 + £20. The condition is amazing, it looks new without a box, thats all. Just had a little play about with it in my office. Its quite, no real issues with it (But then im used to my Sigma 24-70 f2.8, anyone who has used it know how much of a noisey little sod it can be ) and the focusing is quick, maybe not lighting fast, but what do you expect from the cheapest 70-200 f2.8. Id love to see how fast the Canon is

So far, the couple of test shots i have taken in my office has been good. The fact that it focuss at a distance of 95cm through the zoom range impresses me!

Will post a few test shots up when i get home and get chance (if the lights ok) but im really happy with this and would call it a bargin :)

Haha, still havent got any ready

Took a few at a gig from Friday, hand held. Not sure how they have come out yet as i havent even had chance to get the images off the cards and process the RAW files!

Would love to see some of the shots, and some feedback from you about the lens! What did you like most? What didn't you like about it? Was there anything that surprised you?

Thanks.

ditto - the Tamron is supposed to be an optically stunner.

Quite tempted by one myself tbh.

Question is: Do I get one in Canon or Nikon fit...?

bit of a hyjack . sorry

I have the old sigma 70-210 f2.8 its a lovely lens, but the autofocus is a bit slow, are the new ones any fast focus wise?

(the 70-210 f2.8 struggleed to keep up with readio controlled cars racing, whilst my really cheap 70-300 f3.5-6.3 managed it much better)
