Sigma stabilizes 17-70mm fast normal zoom
new version of sigma 17-70

Highly tempted I must say...

A nice size for a walkabout and quite quick as well....

Looks nice I would not mind one to replace my 18-55 kit lens

Brilliant.

Was going togetthe Tamron 17-55 VC to accompany my new D90 next year but think this will now be leading the choice as with my Nikon 70-300 there will be no gap in the focal range.

Anyone know what sort of price this will carry?

I have the normal 17-70 and the HSM would be very nice, and the IS (or whatever they call it!) would be nice on the long end, may make a nice upgrade....

The only downside is the hunting in low light- is that down to the lens or my 400D though?!

I found this

Sigma's 17-70 DC Macro HSM has been one of their most solid performers and is a fantastic addition to any APS-C sized DSLR kit. This versatile lens now has a new stablemate - literally - in the stabilised and slightly faster version announced today. Exchanging the ability to focus down to the front element for Optical Stabilisaton, the minimum focus of 22cm remains competitive in a lightweight multi-purpose lens with an SRP of only £399.99.

Looks like a good price as well :-)

if it was 2.8 through the range it might of replaced my 18-50..

I would rather have the range and IS....

Most zoom lenses appear to suffer at the fastest f stops which means being able to stop down 1-2 then use IS to give you a stable shot is another approach.

Thoughts?

if it was a constant f2.8 would be great

still heading for a tamron 28-75 f2.8 as it was a good lens on the sony

The 17-70 is a great lens. Sold mine recently and got for a Sigma 18-50 2.8 but it looks like I will have to buy one of these now!

furr dos on the range, personally not having an extra 20mm isnt a show stopper for me.

ive got 3 2.8 lenses, i havent found them suffering from anything :)

Hope its better than their 18-50 OS, bought a new one and it was total cack

Camera World were very good and refunded me with no problem, it was just so soft and not a patch on my 17-70
Took comparison shots, same everything and even put them on a flash drive in case of problems at the shop

Seems Sigma do still have a quality issue and would want to see some hands on reviews first
Wouldn't consider buying from abroad in case of a duff sample which had to go back

Think I might just settle on the 17-70 and a nice sharp 10-20 I already have
(just in case anyone thought this was an anti Sigma post)

Cheers

if it was the constant 2.8 it would be twice the price :(

f2.8 throughout would be good, but at 17-70...surely impossible without LOADS of expense.
all the 2.8 lenses that go that wide stop at 50 or 55 for f2.8 through
even the Canon L glass can't do that, as the f2.8 L starts at 28- or is limited to 16-35mm iirc

this looks like a great walkabout lens...esp if it is sharper and easily to use than the 17-85 IS canon which curves things like reflective shiny bald head!

Any release date info on this? Looks very interesting and, if the optics are up to its predecessor, it'd be the bargain lens of the century.

Park Camera's site says expected Jan

A popular camera shop in the west country has it for sale at £309. That's some £100 cheaper than Tamron's 17-50/2.8 VC. So if you don't need the constant aperture you can save yourself some money, get better AF motor (probably, as it's HSM) and partial macro capability.

My personal opinion is that I want 2.8 across the range and the difference between 50-70mm is a small bit of cropping! I will try the two before I trade up from my 18-70.

An interesting lens nevertheless.

OS fine - but surely they could make it internal focus too.
Same goes for the tamron 17-50.

I think the point of the walk about lens is that it translates to a

27 - 112 v a 27 - 80 so actually thats a 32mm difference....

Handy range...

Now, this one or the canon 15-85 which has an even greater range but is slower....

LOL, so good range, fast aperture, stabilised and ultra/hypersonic focus motor for under 400 quid and you're still not happy? ;)

Think this will be replacing my 18-55mm IS come January, looks like a cracking lens to me

mmmmm.... i'm deciding between this (309 pounds) and an 18-105mm VR (nikon) for 200pounds....

any advice?

£309? From where!?

I just googled it...

Bristol Camera's

309.00

Not sure if that includes delivery...

That spec is good enough that I'm seriously tempted to trade in my orgional 17-70, it's been a great lens but the slight improvment in speed and the addition of OS make the new lens a cracker on paper, just need to wait for a few reviews to confirm they haven't messed up the image quality which was probably better than any of it's rivals.
