I have a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 lens as a back-up. A while ago it took a tumble off my tripod on to some concrete and ended up in several pieces. Photoguard were great with the claim, and Phototopia (1st Cameras) have been pretty quick handling the repair (so far!).

Sadly, when the lens was returned to me, it was as soft as a sponge (it was a very sharp copy before the fall). So the lens went back to Phototopia, who then sent it back to Sigma UK, who have now sent it to Sigma Japan for unknown reasons.

My question is, what can Sigma Japan do repair wise, that Sigma UK can't?! I'd have thought that while Sigma UK won't have a full production line, they'll have a repair centre, access to any part they need, and the neccesary machines to diagnose, test and calibrate?!

I'm worried that the lens is going to come back, still soft, and I'll have to lump it!!

sigma japan have a hell of a lot more parts available to test with if the error is of unknown origin.

if the issue is resulting from a known part then they normally send the part from japan to uk.

Thanks for that, Neil.....I guess I was over estimating what Sigma UK had in the way of diagnostic equipment etc. I thought they'd be able to handle everything up to and including complete lens manufacture (albeit on a smaller/slower scale the Sigma Japan) so thought they'd be able to handle pretty much anything!!

Now I have the image of a rusty old caravan, with a stained mattress and a broken fridge outside.....:p

Well, I'm hoping their not too bad as I've just sent in the 50-500OS & 1DIII for calibration!

I had a lens go back to Japan and it was within the timeframe given and it is now perfect.

It's a fairly non descript industrial unit

the google street view didn't work

Look on streetview for Little Mundells

Unless we work for sigma uk we will all be guessing. Why not ask Sigma UK? That will be fact not an opinion? I'm sure it'll be sorted for you though.

The 50-500 came back perfect, I then had the 70-200 done, that took a couple of goes and a firmware change but that's spot on now too

I live close by and hand delivered my lens that need repair under warranty (except it didn't, a component in the camera had gone). It was a small modern industrial unit and told there was 3 people who worked there.
