Right I'm needing a walkabout lens for my newly purchased d200. I'm definitely looking for a f2.8 as i do quite alot of low light work. Being a student with no job or money i have sadly had to rule out a Nikon version (at £550-£700!!). So who uses the Sigma or Tamron equivalents?? 17-50/17-70

Any opinions greatly appriciated!

Russ

Tamron 17-28 2.8 out of the options given. Can't see you beating it for the price.

Or as you are on a walkabout, walk closer to your subject

Sorry, couldn't resist it. The sigma 24-60 2.8 and tamron 28-75 2.8 have received good reviews.

i will be ordering the sigma 24-70 f2.8 this week - gets good reviews

AS many on here will know, I love my one of these, and when out and about generally it rarely leaves the camera. It's a weighty bit of kit - but also feels fantastically solidly made - the zoom and focus rings are easy to use without feeling flimsy. AF is fast and decisive although a tad noisy as the lens doesn't have HSM. Other than the slightly noisy AF, the only other downside is the "double system" for changing from Manual to AF - as well as sliding the switch on the side of the lens, you also have to slide a collar on the lens itself - apparently if both parts aren't set to the same mode, it can cause problems with the lens &/or camera.

i got the sigma 17-70mm f2.8 great lens and a decent price :)
