I am looking to upgrade my long lens from a EF 70-300 USM IS to a longer focal length, The two lenses that fall into my price range are, The Sigma 50-500mm F4-6.3 EX DG, and the Canon EF100-400 f4.5-5.6 L IS, My Camera is a Canon EOS 5D, has anyone used one or both of these lenses on this camera, and if so, what are your comments please.

If 100-400 is full frame compatible then i woulkd go with that, gonna be much better than the Bigma, more usable and better image quality, although the bigma is good

to me 100-400 no contest

I had to make this decision when considering some super teles to replace my Sigma 70-300. I'd say the 100-400 is the better choice to make - build quality is great, more portable than the Bigman and great IQ, especially if you stop down a little. Most of my favourite nature/wildlife shots have been taken with that lens.

As high speed action isn't the 5D's forte ten I assume you have a little time avaiable when you're shooting. I think the 5D is better suited to something like a 300/4 IS or 400/5.6 with an optional 1.4x or 2x T/C....would come in around the same price and give you better overall IQ.

Worthy of consideration I think...

Last year I found myself in a similar situation. I went to a big camera shop and played with the Canon 100-400, the Sigma 50-500 and the Sigma 170-500. I thought the Canon was a head-and-shoulders winner. The build quality and ergonomics are way better than the two Sigmas, and the IQ (which of course I couldn't test, but which is reputed to be better) and IS were just the icing on the cake. The newer Sigmas (120-400 OS and 150-500 OS) may give the Canon more of a run for the money, though.

Good lens and I wouldn't be too bothered by the dust 'issue'! I have an old 35-350L which is similar to the 100-400. It's probably at least 6 years old now(?) and it's my main lens for wildlife and sport, so it's on the body all the time. Never had a dust issue with it and I love the push pull zoom, very natural. Obviously just my experience and opinion :D

Dust what dust! I've got a 100-400 and use it on the 5D. I don't have any problem with dust. I think it's really a red herring. It's something people years ago speculated over but I've not had any problem and I haven't seen any users complain about it. The 100-400 is fine, does go a bit soft over about 350mm ( it is only a bit) I tend to stop at that point and crop on screen. However the 400mm f5.6 does seem to be really sharp. Much sharper than the 100-400 at full stretch . Pity no IS but then you can't have everything. So if you are looking for just a long lens then I'd go with Canon Bob. I'm thinking of either the 300 or 400 for my next lens.

Thanks for the interesting comments, I am now tempted to go for the 100-400mm, just a bit concerned about the dust issue.
Someone else was concerned about that yesterday. Here's what i wrote then.
I've heard several people raise concerns about sucking in dust, but I'm afraid I don't have any hard data. I know a couple of safari regulars who swear by the 100-400 in what must be the dustiest environment most of us will ever encounter, so I figure it can't be too bad. The way I see it, a small amount of dust in the lens isn't going to hurt your pictures, and a lot of dust in the lens means a quick trip to Canon for internal cleaning. No big deal.

With the 100-400 being an "L" series it should be sealed from dust and moisture, so how ( if at all ) would the dust get in?

Being an L series doesn't mean that it is sealed...many L series lenses are not sealed.

Thanks Bob, and everyone for your coments, I have decided to order the 100-400 tomorrow, I shall look forward to shooting some nature and action as soon as it arrives

just been reading up on this and wondered if the 'bigma' 50-500mm has any sort of IS type thing...as i'd have thought without it would be pretty bad handheld if indoor, or low-light, etc...? i really want this one because of the huge zoom capability over the canons (now that i've got a press pass :D:D:D handy for long distance shots at car meets, etc!), but from experience i know 'IS' is a must!!
edit- oops forget that, just found another thread detailing this!
