Sigma or Canon lens?

Iv been looking at buying a wide-angle lens, and its a toss up between the Canon EFS or the Sigma lens.

At first I thought, oh maybe sigma do similar lenses to the canon ones just at a cheaper price, but theyre often the same or more in cost Iv found, so that rules that one out. So maybe its a quality thing?

I mean, is one better than the other or does it just boil down to preference?
 
Are you talking about the canon 10-22mm EF-S and the sigma 10-20mm?
 
The Canon lens is very good the the sigma is poor if you don't want to spend the money on the Canon get the Tokina.
 
I had the Canon lens, not a bad lens in sharpness but let down by build quality. The sigma is not far of the Canon in sharpness and build quality. I sold my Canon after trying a Tokina 12-24 F4 which was definitly the sharpest of the three and exibiting minimal CA (Plus it is built like a tank)

Well thats alot cheaper than I expected. How does it line up against the Canon ***, is it worth spending the extra on the canon or is there minimal difference in picture quality?
 
Dont forget the Sigma 10-20 which is very good value, not quite up to the Canon but a lot cheaper!!

That's quite a sweeping statement. I agree the Canon is very good, I have one. What makes you say the Sigma is poor?
 
The stories about Sigma lenses giving errors on newer Canon bodies, and the apparent variation in focussing quality always make me buy Canon. Maybe the stories are started by Canon for that reason ;-)

I've never heard anyone complain about the the build quality of the Canon 10-22mm.
The build quality of mine is superb, sharp across the entire focal range and I've never come across a review that betters either the Sigma or Tokina over the Canon.
You also gain 1/2 stop with the Canon.
I can't speak for the new Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 as I've not read any reviews on this but a quick look on camerapricebuster has it listed as a more expensive lens than the Canon 10-22.
 
The problem with Sigma is their QA, or lack of it.
If you get a good copy of the 10-20 they give good value for money.
 
I wrote this on another thread.
Over the years I have owned 4 Sigma lenses, 3 of them have suffered either back or front focusing problems. I have now totally lost faith with Sigma. I will only buy Canon in the future. I know there is a lot of people that will disagree, But when faith in a product is lost it has gone forever.
The only one I kept was the 12-24. Which is a peach.

Well you have now :)

Bear in mind I moved from the Canon to the Tokina so I compare build quality between the two. Sharpness, well that is just my experience. The Canon wasn't bad, the Tokina was just a bit better - otherwise I would have kept the Canon.

Not sure where your 1/2 a stop comes from though.
