I'm a total n00b when it comes to photography :baby:

But I'd like your thoughts on Sigma lenses

I've just bought one, you see. The 70-300mm :)

I've yet to try it out, as it was delivered today

Sigma lenses are good for people working on a budget, such as new photographers, like yourself. They have two ranges like Canon, their regular lenses and their EX series (similar to Canon's L lenses).

Almost all of the lenses they make are a cheaper version of an equivalent Canon model. I, personally, think that the Sigma lenses are good value for money, but after using L lenses, you can see why people choose them over the Sigma's.

Anyway, the 70-300 is a good Telephoto zoom to get started with. When you feel you've mastered it, have a look at the Canon 70-300 IS or the 70-200 f/4 IS :)

Thanks for that, mikezs :)

Yes, I suppose my ambition is to get a good zoom lens with a constant f number throughout

But you know how it is - money and all that........

I'm looking at getting one of these soon as well (the 70-300mm that is), did you get the slightly more expensive APO version (it has a thin red band around the end) or the other version? When you've taken a few shots do you think you could post them? It's quite a common starter lens, it would be good to see what it can do!

Chris

Hi Chris :)

Yes I bought the APO version. It cost me £159 at Warehouse.com

Having done some test shots around the house, it seems quite the dogs ********!

Some Sigma's, in my opinion, perform better optically than their Canon L counterparts.
The 24-70 and the 70-200 f/2.8 to name just two.

The canons generally are better in every other department (weather-proofing, autofocusing, build quality).

Most of the really cheap canons/sigmas are totally naff, whereas some are good.
Some of the expensive canons/sigmas are totally naff, whereas most are good.

Do your research is the only bit of advice I can give you on lenses

Thanks for that, foodpoison

I spend hours online and trawling through magazines before buying just about anything :)

£ for £, the Sigma 70-300 APO is the best value lens you can get for your money.

Loved it.

Although I sold it and got a 70-200 L.

I'll take succour from the first two lines of your post, if it's all the same to you ;)

I'm very new at this game and the Sigma was my second purchase (after the nifty fifty - hard to beat at £60). TBH I love the 70-300 APO, most of my shots are taken with it, although in saying that I sometimes find the 70mm too restrictive. I was lost as to what lens to get and this is generally recommended as great value for money... and I got mine 2nd hand for £80 I can't complain.

If you are looking for sample shots you could try this (not the best, but he best I have to hand).

Although for £150 I have heard that the Canon 55-250 IS is probably the best (for a few quid more).

i have the sigma 105 F2.8 EX DG macro, and the 17-70 F2.8-4.5 DC macro lens...which i bought to replace my kit lens, and both are very good indeed.i'm now thinking about getting the sigma 100-300 F4 for my wildlife/motorsports shooting, which i believe is a cracker of a lens, and £400 cheaper than the sony equivalent.

I quite like the look of the 50-500mm, but it's rather expensive! :(

And I've also just discovered that a 2x teleconverter for my 70-300mm doesn't yet exist :sulk:

I think I'll go away and write a song.........

The Sigma EX range are top notch and as previously said, can out-perform 'branded' lenses for half the price.

Not to be sniffed at unless you're a gear snob.

:agree:

I've got the 70-200 f2.8 & the 24-70 f2.8 and they are not too shabby at all

hadn't looked at the 50-500,but i want something with a constant aperture of at least F4 or faster..

the sony lens is £1200,whilst the sigma is £760-ish,and you can get a teleconverters for both.

unfortunately, the only way i can have either is by selling my motorbike :help:

Keep your motorbike and sell your Missus! ;)

The 50=500 is very slow at focusing and trying to catch fast moving wild life is hard work
