I am looking at getting a longer focal length lens, will this fit my Canon 550d..
Sigma 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG APO OS, Canon EF Fit

Thank you in advance for your help.

Short answer Yes
All ef and efs lenses will fit

not seen that lens before, would be interested in your view and some sample shots. looks like a very useful focal length for some wildlife shots

I have a copy of this lens and it works on my Canon 1000d.

Thank you for your responses....I wasn't entirely sure, so I thought id best check, the info on the web wasn't helpful really. Yes I will keep you posted on the results, it arrives tomorrow, so plan on going out if I can with it to try some bird shots, nature is the real reason for getting it.

I have a sigma 70-200 and a 2x TC.
I haven't seen anything yet that makes me desperate for a 100-400 L, 50-500 or 80-400 for the quality of output I crave for amateur-hour when I shoot.

Its quite an old lens (discontinued) of sigma's. In good light it will produce some good results, autofocus on the slower side and definitely not on par with the canon 100-400mm. Depends how much you're willing to spend. Sigma replaced that lens with the 120-400mm OS which is definitely an improvement and can be picked up for £350-450, or if you only need 300mm the sigma 100-300mm f4 a fantastic lens and can be picked up for £300-400, very sharp, fast focusing and will take a sigma TC. As light drops off the sigma 80-400mm performance falls off significantly, but perhaps slightly improved by the more modern sensor/ISO technology of todays camera bodies. If you do purchase it, just work with its limitations. Not sigma's best lens by far and it depends what you want to photograph

Thank you all, well, I did buy this lens, and to be fair, what you have said has been bang on, its not that quick, but for the money, it will do me for a year easily, whilst I am learning I think it can be a great tool. I must admit, compared to my canon stock 250m.....the images at the first trip out looked a little dark, as you said they would. So, I compensated by adjusting it manually, and to be fair I was pleased with the results....http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/first-heron-shots.520584/

Thank you all so far, you do realise I am hooked now..!

not a bad lens at all ,had one of these as my first venture into longer lenses some years ago ,,as you say it will keep you going for a while and still does a decent job within its light gathering capabilities ,you will probably find its best to use it in a/v mode at f8 and adjust the iso to get your shutter speed up ,just remember the rule of thumb 400mm plus crop factor = approx. 550mm so keep shutter speed to a minimum 1/750th sec higher if possible
