Ok i have the Canon 450D and while going through my wifes old lenses we came across a Sigma 90mm prime lens, now it fits the Canon body ok but when i take a picture it comes up with an "error 01 Communications between the camera and lens is faulty, clean the lens contacts".

Ive cleaned the contacts but still no good, so does anyone know if its a faulty lens or just not compatible.

Fixed zoom, although ive now got it to auto focus and take 2 pictures out of 10 try's.

Im wondering that it might be the shutter getting stuck as sometimes it fires and others it doesnt although sometimes there seems to be a delay.

I'm not familiar with the older Sigma for Canon lenses HOWEVER on some older lenses that have a aperture setting ring you have to set the f stop for minimum opening (f22, 32 etc) for it to work in auto aperture mode. These lenses usually have the highest number (smallest lens opening) on the scale marked in a different color than the other setting numbers. Good Luck.

On the older Sigma lenses that I have which were made before the Canon digitals came out I have found that I can use them fine as long as I don't have my 20D set to a mode which will try to adjust the aperture. If you want to use it stopped down, you could use an aperture mask. It's much more of a faff but for situations where you're going to set up for the shot without being in a hurry it can work really well.
