Folks,

I am looking at my lens lineup and looking to improve the quality a little this year. A couple of options for wildlife are the sigma 120-300 f2.8 or the 100-300 f4 to replace my 70-300 AF-S. I know that these will take a 1.4x tc but does it have to be the sigma one or will the kenko work with them

Idealy I would like the Nikon 300 F4 AF-S and a 70-200 b ut I don't think that is going to happen any time soon.

Many thanks

Nick

I looked into this when I got my 120-300, a few people have success with kenko ones, but a lot have complaints about sigma's HSM and kenko TCs not getting along. Continually hunting, never locking af etc. Stick to sigma if you want to ensure compatibility.

Thanks chris.

I have a kenko tc that I have used on my nikon 70-300 but you really need decent light to make it useable hence looking at other lens options.

if its any use i have the sigma 1.4 on the 120-300 and it handles it like its not even there performance and quality wise i find.

Thanks for that Neil, I think the 120-300 might be a bit out of price range but it would give me a good amount of flexibility but retain IQ even with the TC.

I echo Neil's comment; it's mightily impressive for what a lot would view as 'third party trash'! Keep an eye out for secondhand ones around £900 - I've made comments elsewhere in this sub-forum with hints on the DG/non DG copies and their tripod collars; as long as it has the bigger one (model TS-41) attached that doubles as a carrying handle, there's not much difference optically between them.
