I'm looking at upgrading my standard zoom lens to something faster (both in aperture and focusing) and sharper and am comparing the Sigma EX 24-70mm f2.8 DG HSM to the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L.

Not had much luck finding reviews on the EX HSM (lots of the cheaper Macro version but not on the more expensive HSM that I can find) so was wondering if any of you fine people can give me some advice please ?

Sigma appears to be smaller, lighter and £200 cheaper than the L, but then the L is an L and these pages seem to rave about them.

It will be used on a 40D, currently I've a Sigma 18-125 DC OS HSM, nice lens but a bit slow, and the Sigma EX 10-20mm which I think is great. So I've no brand name hangups, just want to know if the L is worth the extra cash

Any opinions gratefully recieved

I have both L is all round better but the sigma turns in reasonable results and is £200 pound cheaper as you say the reason i have the two is quite simply i earn a living from photography and it always pays to have a spare
Regards
Lost

Both lenses may have quality control issues, and there is potentially a new Canon coming in January according to various rumour sites. I'd wait a month, unless you need it now in which case try both of them and compare the photos.

well the resale on the L will be good, can't guarantee you'll lose a lot of value on the sigma if you resell.

here is some write up on the sigma

i'd reccomend hiring both for a weekend

lensesforhire do the canon, not sure about the siggy

If Sigma made lenses to Canon L standard, they would cost just as much. In fact they do make some very good lenses, eg 50mm f/1.4, and they are as expensive.

Have you thought about the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS for your crop camera? It's the favourite walkabout choice.

No, we don't offer the Sigma 24-70. There wouldn't be much point - who'd want to hire it instead of the Canon, just to save maybe £5 per week? We generally only stock third-party lenses where they offer something that the camera manufacturers don't - for example the Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 fisheye, 120-300mm f/2.8, and 300-800mm f/5.6.
