Hi there. Been roaming the forum for a while but not posted much.

A friend of mine is selling a sigma ex 24-70 f2.8 so got a couple of questions.

First off is this lens any good (not in comparison to canon L. They're the mutts nuts)
Second the lens has a communication fault so i can get it cheap but was wondering if anyone else had this problem and how it was fectified/cost of repair etc...

Any info would be smashing!

is it the 'DG' version?
(which is basically just a lens coating.... but it's newer and 'designed' for digital SLRs)
Either way, I think it's a well regarded lens, but as with any lens, you get the good and the bad... can you test it out?

A quick google seems to suggest a number of people reporting a communication fault on these lenses :| A quick read further seems to suggest it can be fixed with a chip or a firmware upgrade to allow them to talk with the newer camera's.

I think I'd give Sigma servicing a call about it.

Good copies of the Sigmas are good - not up to L standard but not up to L prices either! However, as daugirdas has pointed out, if it's broken, it's probably not worth fixing. If it's very cheap, it might be worth sending it to Sigma for a repair estimate and basing any offer or decision on the repair costs (along with a full service).

The acronym "DG" on sigma lenses is not primarily referring to a coating (although they do have extra anti reflection included)

It is mainly to designate the lens as being suitable to use on both Full Frame and crop bodies, Whilst the "DC lenses" are crop only

if its the older non-HSM then walk away, it always comes out with bad reviews.

sigmas service charge on the HSM is 98.99, the non-HSM 85.99. they normally fix issues under the service tarrif but ask them for a quote.

Yes, however... if you are going to go down the fix it route, it might be worth getting "herts camera repair services" to look at it.
The guy used to work for sigma servicing and has come in at HALF of the price from sigma to replace the motor on my 300-800

i have had minor work from sigma come in under the tarrif price. depends what it is, hence good idea to get a quote :)

sigmas work is guaranteed for 6 months too if i remember rightly?

Thanks guys. Much apreciated. Its the ex dg hsm version so i thought that the chip wouldn't be an issue. I've had a few quotes an decided not to bother as i could probably get a decent second hand one for less of the cost of this one and having it repaired!

I'll keep looking
