I'm looking at buying a dedicated flash as I am getting more into portrait stuff, it's just for fun and have quite a few baby shoots lined up I'm doing free of charge for friends, I want to buy a new flash that will last and also be suitable if I decide to do more portrait stuff in the future. Have been looking at the Nikon sb700 but also read a few reviews about the sigma ef530. Seems its main downfall is no Lcd screen on the unit, I've never used a flash before and a lot will be trial and error, the sigma is massively cheaper than the Nikon but gets great reviews, does any one have any experience of using one? Would it be suitable for indoor portrait photography, not studio based although I have a small portable studio background I bought 2m x2m with a 3m white canvas.

Many thanks
Danny

I had the Sigma but was not impressed with the LEDs on the back, I now have the Meike MK910 which I find to be an excellent flash nice large LCD screen, good controlls, works well for me.

Hi Danny,

I think you should take a look at Yongnuo flashes.
Something like this. You may even find it a bit cheaper elsewhere.

Compared to the old days, YN flashes are almost disposable prices, feature packed and they work great.

Thanks guys, can anyone recommend a wireless uni to go with this so I could use the flash off camera?

Thanks

YN622N TX and YN622N from Yongnuo - bargain price too.

Check out the Shanny flashes very good value for money

Thanks Phil, so if I buy all three I should be ok? £140 for all 3 pieces. Was looking at spending 220 just on the sb700 alone :)

Is this any use or is this too cheap to be any good Seems to get good reviews

Yes it's too cheap - whilst the flash is iTTL compatible, the triggers are dumb - you could use it but it won't be as pleasant experience as the Yongnuo gear.

My personal feeling is that the equipment should be easy to use, or it gets in the way of the process, worst case scenario is when the gear becomes a source of frustration which spoils the experience entirely.

Thanks Phil great help :)
For the extra 100 pound it's worth getting the better equipment :)
