Sigma DP Merrils Price Drop

yeah thats what i average, sounds alot, but the quality makes it worth it, really is better than nearly everything else out there.
guess the a7r does 36-40mb raw files? that would be the closest competitor camera in terms of price + detail

Hmmm, better than a FF body with a small fast prime? That's my quandary... My 6d and the 35mm f/2 is only slightly bigger, so would it be a pointless addition?

Do you need that many pixels?
What do you take photos of?
Are you prepared to carry a lot of batteries?
Have you tried Sigmas software?
Are you okay with slow performance/AF?

I think these are the issues I have with the DPMs, no doubt the IQ is fantastic for the price though. But as a grab and go camera I would invest in something less 'frustrating'. As you can see some are happy with its quirks but a lot are also for sale, marmite camera.

in terms of detail and sharpness at low iso its hard to imagine getting more than a merrill. Your 6d will be a fair bit bigger, dp is nex5n ish in size, with 49 or 52mmm filter thread.
its probably a 30% increase in detail and sharpness over a ff canon, with a good to great lens.

ff will give you shalllow dof and way better high iso, and interchangeable lenses
 
picked up the little flash today, seems decent enough, but no af assist light is abit of a shame.
blinded me family well enough :-P :-)
 
i wanted to have the ttl for my dad, and couldnt find the metz 20 cheap when i looked :x
 
Thinking about buying a DP2m for street photography, currently using 5dm3 manually with prefocussing 1/640, f8, auto-iso.

I've read about poor battery life, slow write times and poor high-iso handling - however I'm still interested :)

i actually tried to order one from Clifton - but they didn't have stock, and until they finish processing the refund - I'm too tight for funds to buy elsewhere.

That means I have time to think on it..... is this a good or bad idea :D ?? any thoughts?

has a quiet shutter, you can turn the screen on the back off, does have a great look to black and white natively, doesnt look fancy
 
Having not originally realising there is a DP2 and DP2m - I just found out the manual focus is not as good on the DP2m

the problem with the focus wheel on the lens is that you will have to check focus by looking at LCD. With the wheel, you just set on 1,2,3, …etc meters without looking at screen. If the lens barrel had distance markings, it would be fine, but it doesn’t because it is probably just another fly by wire system. Cheers.

I originally read something about a manual focus dial which was tactile.

this suggests there is clicking sound - don't suppose anyone has experience with using manual focus and not looking at the lcd

the dp1s i have has a rear focus dial, much like a compact might have i guess. the M series have a fly by wire focus ring, with the distance scale showing on the rear lcd at the bottom, can take some pictures or video of if you want ?

I currently using the lens gauge on my dslr, looking down I can quickly adjust it.

I was thinking I would use the dp2m with the LCD off, but at that point I also hadn't realised there was no built in VF. Although I would have happily hip shot.

yeah the screen off but settings on is the same as normal, but no liveview, just black

as for zone focusing, you would likely need to put a few marks down, as it goes 1 2 infinity, so a fine silver or white pen you could put some lines down below the lcd for 5metres or whatever.

lecia is probably a better system for zone focusing, as you can tell my feel of the tab, and look down at lens top too
 
so tempted in getting an sd1 with the price drops...but no live view..what wear sigma thinking of...maybe canon have a foveon type sensor up there sleeve....is there anyone on here using a canon 250 close up lens with the dp3 ,,what do they think
 
I use a marumi close up filter on my dp3 works a treat!
 
thx ive heard of that and it got good review...would there be much of a difference compared to the canon ,,I think I read the marumi was 1.6 and the canon was 1.8 mag
 
i think those closeup filters are fairly uniform in performance, a good one is good no matter what system you stick it on
 
I took my DP2m with me to Venice last week. I don't do landscapes much and when I do I always seem to over-process them but here are a couple I like:

I had my Fuji gear with me too but enjoyed using the Sigma so much I've just ordered a DP1m.
 
Need to get out with my DP3,not used it in a while.
 
Is anyone using a grip with their DP Merrill? Looking at getting one along with a wrist strap so open to suggestions on both. :)
 
No grip on mine,liked it as it is..I do use a JJC neoprene wrist strap though which is very comfy and well made
 
I'm using the Sunwayfoto L-bracket / grip on my DP3M. It adds noticably to the weight of the camera and physically bulks it up - and the handgrip part is quite small.

My interest was more the L-bracket - the grip is detachable but I've left it in place as it seems to balance slghtly better with it in place.

If i was after just a grip then I'd be looking for a lighter solution - maybe something like the Franiec grip.
 
i liked the frenic grip i got on the dp1s, but not sure its worth the money, but im tight :D
 
Thanks. I'd thought about the L-bracket ones but wondered how much they added to the size of the cam. Looks like it'll be a franiec grip again (have one on the rx100).

I have the Franiec grip on my DP2m and I find it great. It provides a much more secure grip. I plan to get one for my DP1m and DP3m. I have a neck strap on my DP2M and a JJC wrist strap on the other two. One problem I found without the grip is I hold the camera slightly differently and I find I was inadvertently pressing the right hand button of the four way controller. This resulted in me applying + exposure compensation. Don't seem to have this problem with grip fitted.
 
I took my DP1m out with me on Hampstead Heath yesterday and took some tree shots just to check the details it could capture. But a picture of a tree is boring so played about with Nik plugins. There isn't much point having a camera like a Merrill and then destroying all the detail with excessive post-processing but what the heck.
