Really nice bokeh. Looking into getting this lens myself. Does it come with hood, case, like the L series? And if so, is the hood a petal or a cone design?

Yep it comes with petal hood, case, the lens case is a square black canvas type, well padded though.
I am really pleased with the lens.:)

Thats awesome. Amazon seems the best place to get it from too, Il order it monday.

You will love it.:)

Yep, I've got one on my 50D too!

Some people will tell you that this is the least sharp of the lot, but my experiences have been very positive! There are 2 versions that I know of, the original non-macro one, the macro, and the macro II. I've done sports and stage productions, and haven't struggled with sharpness!

Chris I have also been toying with this lens, do you not find the lack of IS an issue?

Theres one of these at my local used camera shop, it's the original non-dg non macro model. I'm tempted to pick it up.

Its a pretty fast lens, so you can get away with quite a bit handheld Id imagine. It all depends what your going to be using it for. I know i can get workable results handholding some cheap 90-300mm canon zoom i used to use at 300mm with a shutter of 1/200. Monopods help too.

And for the price, you cant expect IS and f2.8 unfortunately.

I understand that IS would be a miracle at this price level, and I am now tempted to see if I can try one to see how if I can get on without IS.

That is the model I've got, I'm very pleased with mine :)

sigma are releasing a 70-200 with OS iirc price will be approx £1k

It was horrible at first :D

I upgraded from a 70-300 IS USM, which was awesome at the long end, you could have pretty awful technique and still get sharp shots! Not so with the sigma.

It was a steep learning curve, I thought at first it was a soft copy, but after a few shoots the results improved dramatically. I use it for sports mainly, so unless I have high enough shutter speed the movement won't be captured anyway. Needless to say the ISO button gets a good workout!

I used it for a theatre production a few weeks ago too. It was properly dark, getting shutter speeds of 1/50 etc. It's tricky, but definitely doable.

If you really want IS, Sigma are bringing out a model with OS, it'll be expensive at first but as they start to come up secondhand I reckon it'll be a bargain!

Thats the one I have too, wait till you see the nice lens case :gag:

Lens is very nice though. Sharp just a noisier AF than USM. Go for it. If you hate it you can always get rid of it for about waht you paid.

Is the auto focus being noisy a negative for you guys? I almost like it. Its like camera shutter. I like hearing my camera working, rather than the silence of a compact etc... Obviously it would be an issue with wildlife photography though.

For 1k they can get to France ! I'll take the non OS version...

That's RRP though! In the same way the non-OS one has RRP of £817.38, but sells for £549.00.

It'll go down in price pretty rapidly I think, the price is the big selling point for 3rd party manufacturers!

I just found it to be a bit noisier than the USM on the 135? It's not anywhere near nifty 50 loud and it makes a pleasant whooosh sound. Not a buzzzzz. Still I found in the church ceremony a few of the closest people were able to hear the motor and I got a few looks so switched to the 85. No big deal, probably unoticable most of the time. But in noise sensitive places you can hear it.

Perhaps it's a trait of the really old non-DG non-macro.

That's the advantage to buying second hand :) Not guaranteed a huge loss when you sell it on.

It's 350 pounds by the way. So a little higher than they usually go for but not too much. Plus I get warranty from the local store.

£350!!! Thats a great deal. I think they tend top go for at least £400 - sometimes even £450, possibly more if it's as new and it's a sharp copy!!!

Still, wait till you see that lens case... mmm...

EDIT: See thats two of us now who agree it's a bargin. GO!!! Run to the shop!!!! Don't even bother putting you shoes on. :p

A bargain if you ask me.

I've seen the original non DG non macro (so basically the very original) go on Ebay for around 330. One just the other day in fact.

i got one of these surplus to requirements in brand new condition.:D

Well I bought it today, even better... for 329! There was a mistake in the pricing, it was labelled as 350 and on their site it was too, but it was a nice surprise to see 329 written on the lens cap when it came out the cabinet! The guy in charge is a great guy, he cracked a joke and I managed to get it for 329

Was a bit worried at first as it looked like something was peeling off, but then I realised it was just the protective transfer thing over the EX logo, heck it's in such good condition that the original owner didn't even take it off :) All looks good to me! Very happy!
