Considering looking for a good second hand one of these lenses, anyone using one of these & very happy with the sharpness?.:)

Yep I had one of these and it was very good..... unlike the other sigma's I had owned, very sharp even wide open, nice contrast and color, the macro ability was also really useful. All in all I would recommend one:thumbs:

Thanks for that Grant,it does look good in the reviews i have read so far.:)

yeah i recommend this lens too, i have the EX HSM model and its lovely...

Yep, I've got one on my 50D too!

Some people will tell you that this is the least sharp of the lot, but my experiences have been very positive! There are 2 versions that I know of, the original non-macro one, the macro, and the macro II. I've done sports and stage productions, and haven't struggled with sharpness!

Thank you all,so the APO 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro HSM is the one to go for?.:)

I have the 70-200 f2.8 ex apo dg, sharp and good contrast and more than happy with it (just as i am with my 24-70 2.8f and 10-20)

Thanks steve,i think thats the one then.:)

before you decide when I was looking into it the tamron 70-200 was a tad sharper wide
in the reviews and a few quid cheaper....

Hmmm,more to think about,hurts my head.:):D:thumbs:

I am also thinking about this lens, but I am not sure. I don't do telephoto shots that much, and already have a 135... if I could get a Sigma for cheap, I'd have it.

If you do buy one, please let us know what price you got it for and post samples!

I have the non-Macro non-DG version of this lens (So I think thats the 70-200mm f/2.8 EX APO HSM ;-) ) and my dad has his own too.

Heres a shot I took yesterday on my way home. Not what I usually shoot but it's the only shot I have to hand on the Laptop.

Give me a minute to fire up the PC and I'll get a 100% crop.

Okay fair enough it took me eight, but here you go 100% crops.

I picked up an EX HSM non macro and I think it's a great lens, esp at the £300 I paid :)

300 notes? bloody 'ell guvna!

I know with 6 months warranty:D I only went to buy a hand strap for the wifes camera.

Thanks for all your input guys.:)

i wonder how the siggy compares to the 70-200 F4 L?

A better comparison with the 70-200 2.8L surely.

I suspect it has better IQ particularly in the edges. I doubt it's night and day though.

Canon = Much smaller & lighter. Great IQ. Better build. Easier to handhold. Less chance of sharpness/focus issues.
Sigma (provided your copy is okay) = Sharp as canon at f/4. More cross type auto-focus points on most cameras. Background Blur. Freezing action. Low-light.

I think i am going to bite the bullet & go for this one at amazon.:)
Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 APO EX DG Macro II Lens For Canon

£588.70 free delivery.

This one does say APO or am i missing something.:)

Can anyone enlighten me on this.:)

Thank you all,so the APO 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro HSM is the one to go for?.:)

I have one & the only limitations are me

Can anyone enlighten me on this.:)

I think 'combatsquirrel' just didn't see the APO in the vast collection of acronyms in your post ;). You have to get a pretty old one to be non-APO!

Thanks guys i think i will order this one tomorrow.:)

100%

WOW!!! This is way oversharpened. 20-30% is the most you should need for a decent shot

Really? On my sports RAW's I always apply 150, 0.3, 0. Canon recommends 300,0.3,0 but I find that because I'm lazy and don't remove the stuff in ACR I only need 150.

Oh and if that was to go to print- the sharpening would be redone depending on media. Say for example canvas I go for 50, 0.4, 2 and paper 500, 0.2, 0.

Just how it's worked for me.

Perhaps in the example - hosting has also added a bit of sharpening and the save for web probably hasn't helped.

Thanks guys i think i will order this one tomorrow.:)

Enjoy the lens.

Can anyone enlighten me on this.:)

The original MKI Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 was just an APO EX lens, it was then followed by various macro and HSMII models .. I think there has been around 5 variations of the lens with another on the way (OS Version).

The MKI (which I have and would never part with) is generally regarded as the sharpest, especially wide open at 200mm.

Thank you all.:)

Ordered from amazon this morning, paid special delivery so should arrive tomorrow.:)

Great stuff !! Please post some pics with it as Im also looking for a faster lens in this range. Have fun

Quick sharp. I agree about the sharpness, it's very sharp (I have the slightly older non-DG model).

Auto-focus isn't quite canon USM though. Thats the only complaint.

It isn't because it's not fast, it's almost on par with the 70-200mm USM. It's the noise. It makes a fairly loud racket compared to USM!!!!

Ordered my new lens yesterday from amazon, paid extra for express delivery & it arrived this morning.
Having had a little mess about with it i must say i am over the moon with the results so far.:)
