Sigma has today announced a very interesting sounding lens, the new APO 50-150 mm F2.8 EX DC HSM. This lens promises to be compact (its DC notation means its designed for an APS-C size imaging circle) and fast (an F2.8 maximum aperture) with a good telephoto zoom range, HSM focusing motor and four SLD (Low Dispersion) glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations. This lens on a 1.5x crop digital SLR (such as the Nikon D80) would provide an equivalent FOV of 75 to 225 mm.

Davey can you post in News forum?

I like the sound of this.

I don't need supah doopah zoom - but if it's reasonably priced and performs well it could be right down my street.

Depending on the price of this lens, I'd be seriously tempted at the 70-200mm f2.8 instead (which I have) as you have that little bit more at the long end. Although it looks like the minimum focussing distance of this 50-150 is better at 1m compared to the 1.8m on the 70-200mm which seems to be better.

Ed :)

i got this release today and completely forget to check the pricing..sorry

Nah, that's just a recommended price. 70-200mm SRP is £800, even Jessops sells them at about £100 less than that and they're about £500 imported. I'd expect/hope to see this available at about £400 imported.

Anyone got one of these yet? Im seriously tempted. It would cover the gap between my 18-70 and 120-300 2.8 just nicely (with a little bit of overlap either end). Its lightweight compared to the 70-200 2.8, so will be easier to lug around.

It covers the equivalent 70-210 (approx) focal length that used to be so popular on film slrs. This is Sigmas aim in making a lens of these lengths.

Ive just read a glowing review in Digital Photographer magazine too.

Onestop have them for under £400.

So, anyone got one? :)

surely if its a dc lens then the crop factor does not affect it

Even though it is a DC lens it is still a 50mm to 150mm focal lengh - that does not change as themm value is down to the optics and not the 35mm equivalent.

Looking forward to your review of this lens, I've been semi pondering it as a walkaround lens (I shoot long or wide :) )

DC means that it will only fit a camera with an APS-C sized sensor. It has nothing to do with the focal length of the lens. Remember, the focal length of a lens does not change when put on a camera with a different-sized sensor - its only the equivalent field-of-view that changes.

Hi Joe,

My wife's been wondering about one of these as a lightweight alternative to the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 beasts. A Canon based forum I frequent has a bit of feedback about them, both of which (at least on the Canon) have focusing issues when trying to do close up shots. The one person suggested buyers be aware of this potential issue when they get their lenses and if neccessary send it to Sigma for calibration.
