I am currently looking at the Sigma AF 400mm f5.6 lens as a cheaper alternative to the canon 400mm prime.

My question is with it being an older lens will I have any compatibility problems with my 40D body?

I am looking at using the combo for shooting motorsports.

All reports I've seen from using it on DSLR's say it functions perfectly but only wide open, you can only use it at f/5.6.
Can't confirm that myself though (though I do have an old sigma 28-70mm that only works wide open, so it certainly makes sense to me).

It could be easier to get Canon. Sigma made many versions of 400mm, and only the last one HSM 77mm was the very best one. It will still have issues including lack of aperture control. It will be stuck at f/5.6 and may lock up the camera, unless it was re-chipped. With so few available, you may be waiting a very long time.

Thanks for the comments guys, I may look at alternatives then. Budget won't quite stretch to the canon 400mm prime at the moment.

I've got an older one which I might sell as I'm looking for something newer and not prime.

Sigma UK no longer rechip

James, my old only works on digital EOS either on Tv or Manual mode with Apeture wide open at f5.6. f6.3 and above then you get a commication error

On my 600D the error is Err 1
On my 30D the error is Err 99

The trouble is James the Canon 400mm F5.6 is a fantastic lens very very sharp with lightning fast autofocus
I would save a little bit harder and wait till I could afford it

the lens would be worth the wait

I can only confirm that. I had a chance to fire only a few shots and was left impressed. 100-400 is just a shadow in comparison. If you are in to it save up a bit more.

I know it's a fantastic lens, as I owned one and sold it about 9 months ago. I've had a baby since and hence the money shortage. I think I will wait until I can but the canon 400mm as it was a great lens.

I would be interested to give it a try having previously owned a canon 400mm prime. My Motorsport shots aren't great so id give the sigma lens a chance.

I've got one of these, its a much older version and it works a treat on my 1Ds
I haven't had much time to play with it but from what I have seen its reasonable! At about 1/10th the price of the Canon its never going to be award winning!

The minimum focus distance is 4m :-D If it ever stops raining I will take some snaps

Its this version:

I had one for a while, I gave up on trying to autofocus with it, it was so slow, images lacked sharpness and contrast either on or off the tripod.

If it was just £40 outlay you could say ok.. I'll try it.. but now they seem to have gone up in price most places to silly money.
