Hi all.

I have recently been looking for a 'first' telephoto lens, for my D3100.

I have looked (on't t'internet) at the Tamron 70-300mm VC, and now i have seen the Sigma lens, which seems to get good reviews.

I wanted to get a decent zoom lens to work with for sport, wildlife, and distance photos, etc...

Does anyone here have the Sigma 70-300mm? Would it be good for a beginner wanting to do the above photography?

Thanks all!

Hi Gaz, it depends how much you have to spend. I started the sigma 70-300 and got on with it ok. if you look at my gallery the marco ones were taken using it. where abouts are you, if you are near I'm able to meet up for you to try it, if you like.

John, thank you for your reply and very kind offer!

You are a fair way away from where i live though, but thank you for the offer! Very kind.

I will have a look at your gallery! What do you think the lens' performance is like with action shots, etc...? Thanks!

hi Gaz, thats a shame. can't say I've tried action shots with it ( sports not my thing). I'm sure someone on here will be able to help you.

iv got this for canon..and yep..i love it..use it for alot of things except landscapes as yet..mostly prefer for portraits and it throws out some nice dof..love mine wouldnt be without it.i would defo reccommend for a 1st telephoto.x

Thanks Niki!

Sounds good, do you have any links to photos youve taken with it? Thanks again!

sorry one downfall with mine a tri-pod is almost always necessary, although i have done some quick stuff..probs guna be the same for Nikon

I've used one on a D3100.

Its slow to focus in all light, whilst the copy I tried was really slow in overcast conditions and the zoom mechanism was tighter than my scottish wallet! Stopped down to around F8 seemed to give acceptable results as long as you can accept it for what it is.

I don't have many good things to say about it especially when used with the D3100. But it does serve a purpose but that said I don't shoot nikon. However I'd say it may be best saving for the Nikon 70-300VR as i've read people on here give it decent reviews or the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 (second hand to keep it roughly same price as the Nikon).

i have on facebook..il pm you.probs not the best as im only a student..but most of my images on there have been done with the telephoto..x

i personaly very rarely use auto focus..i find many lens struggle in low light ,so yes that may be a prob for movement or sports so to speak..but obviously a higher end telephoto is alot better, but once you figure the sigma one out it works well, but i have only really used it for still life, portraiture ect..i also find it works very fast when using studio..thats why i use it and because of the nice dop it gives. It can be on the slightley softer side, but that works ok for doing portraits..so again its up to what you would want to use it for.

Wow!!! Michael! They are fantastic photos!

Youre obviously extremely experienced with photography?

They look great! Thank you! What is going on in the last picture?

Hi Gaz, thanks very much for your comments, lets say I have been taking pictures for quite a while, and birds in flight stuff I do to death every year when I am on holiday. So plenty of practice for me! In the last shot, this was taken of a boat, on a pelagic trip we had caught the fish and were chucking it out to attract the gulls and skuas, this was a fight for 1 piece of fish!

amazing photography michael! must get out and test mine out with some of this..there beautiful ;)

Hi Gaz. I've had this lens for my D3000 for nearly 2 years and for the price it's a cracking lens. I definitely recommend it.

Michael! Thanks again for posting, those pictures look great! Would be nice if i could take something like that one day :)

Hi Simon! Thanks for your post! Much appreciated! Will have a look at some of your pictures soon :) Thank you for your recommendation, much appreciated.
