Got some spare cash and was thinking about this lens. However after searching on tp then some people may not buy this lens. Could anyone give me the good and bad points please :)

for a little bit more i would go with the APO version. I had the APO version and got some good results. at 300mm @ f/5.6, you need quite a bit of light to get it over 1/300s shutter speed. Another good option is the canon 55-250mm again extra pennies needed but i think optically better than any of the sigmas.

If your spare cash will strech to it the Canon 70-300mm is usm is a much better option.

I have not got a lot of coins to go further. Very rare I go over 1/200 as well. Im half so far over this lens. Does anyone have it or has everyone gone the next step ;)

Had the APO version and it was just acceptable, can be had for around £85 2nd hand, I feel the non APO would dissapoint. But for the money you get what you pay for with glass.

I have the Sigma 70-300 APO DG macro and the Canon 55-250 IS, out of the two I prefer the Canon, the Sigma gives the extra length, but the Canon IS system is a good thing to have, and the prices are roughly the same if you search

Got the APO version of the lens and I have no qualms about it at all, for the price I think it is fantastic, I use it for most things be it birds, wildlife, candids or more recently studio shots for my college work. Most of the stuff in my Flickr is taken with it if you are looking for some samples.

If you are prepared to pay a wee bit more though a lot of folk rave about the Canon 55-250mm as it just as sharp and has built in image stabilisation.

I have the APO version and I think it is a fantastic lens for the money!! I did get some decent shots with it! I have an album of photos taken with it here > http://www.flickr.com/photos/ccsharry/sets/72157603675726936/

It doesn't have IS so you do need to work with the limitations (i.e. sufficient light). For a budget tele lens, it is a brilliant starting point! It did the trick to me :)
