Evening all,

As I've sold my walkabout 18-200 lens, I'm after a bit of 'girth' to add to my kit, to compliment my Sigma 17-70 which is due to hit the front of my camera at some point tomorrow. I think I've narrowed it down from a budget point of view to the Sigma 70-300 or the Canon 55-250 IS.

Which way should I go?? Help me make my mind up please! :D

I bought a 55-250mm IS and it has hardly been off the camera since. I find it VERY versatile and I have used it for close ups and zoom. Even used on 250mm it remains clear and takes some great pics. Go for it!

I bought the Canon 55-250m IS recently and I just wish I had bought it sooner. The IS is excellent and I love the lens. In fact I was so impressed with it that I bought up the 18-55mm IS as well. There are some really great prices on UK sites for the 55-250 IS, I bagged mine for around £180 I think.:woot:

My opinion is probably not worth that much - I am an untalented newbie photographer who is pleased when the picture comes out in focus!

Happy shopping:)

I got the 55-250 and it's my most used lens. The IS is brilliant, I've used it for Closeups, zoom and a number of things in between.

i have the sigma lens but i think the canon maybe sharper and unless you REALLY need the extra 50mm i would stick wih the canon.mine give ok results - having to stop it down when shooting long!

We've had both, and side by side the canon is the better bet (in my opinion), sharper, lighter, it's got IS, and certainly with ours it's sharp throughout its' length, wide open and stopped down. It never comes off Mikes' 30d!

A 55-250 has been purchased! :D Thanks for all of the advice marras! :)

I think you've made the right choice bettween those two, it mut be about time for Sigma to start refreshing some of there entry level kit they have there own OS system which added to the 70-300 would make it a much more attractive option. Stabilisation is fast becoming a must have for people and Sigma seem to have been a bit slow to react.

Can I ask where you got this... may get one myself...to replace the Sigma 70-300 APO of all things. Maybe this helps confirm your decision....
