I can vouch for the optics in the Sigma 70-200, never really had a problem with the lens, mine was canon mount but that shouldnt have caused too much of a difference. was using mine with a teleconverter to great effect. Slight loss in IQ though.
Can you explain to me the function of the (I think) exposure lock at the base of the lens, apparently locked for shutter priority and unlocked for aperture and manual. Do I really need to change this when switching modes?
Sorry if this is a noob Q.
what mount is that on, canon doesnt have that switch?
That will be an aperture ring.
When you look it in, the camera will change the aperture electronically. If you unlock it, you change it manually by turning the ring, and you have to be in aperture priority for it to metre automatically.
Just leave it locked in and change the aperture via the camera, it's easier.
i can do you some example shots from the sigma "macro" (1st gen macro) version if thats any use?
some say its soft at 200mm but i have seen any evidence of that on mine or the girlfriends one of the same version..
