I am thinging of buying this lens for my Nikon D90. I'm looking for something with a low f number and a good zoom for general outside portrait photography, taking pictures of my kids at amusement parks etc. I already have a nice prime 50mm lens which does me for indoor use.

This looks like a great lens but I just wonder if it is too big for comfortable general use. I've recently solds a sigma 150-500 because it was just too big and I'm looking for something a bit more versatile.

According to the sigma web site the lens has a diameter of 86.4mm, overall length of 197.6mm and weight of 1,430g.

The 150-500mm on the other hand has a diameter of 94.7mm, length of 252mm and weight of 1780g.

So it really doesn't sound like it is that much smaller / lighter but Iwasn't expecting 200mm lens to be a problem due to bulk.

Interested to hear any views from people who own or have used this type of lens. Many thanks.
 
I've had it, and had to return it because it was faulty. From reading around, a lot of people had the same issue. However if you get a good one they are very sharp etc - I found the focussing to be a bit hit and miss.

As for the weight it really isn't that bad, after you get used to it that is. The lack of OS/VR etc is a major downside though as handholding anything over 1kg tends to get a bit wobbly.
 
i use the non OS MKII on my D7000, no problem what so ever. Depend on your light condition where you shoot, i don;t need OS to keep my hand steady and i get it sharp all the time ......
 
I've got one (it's actually a DG lens though not DX), Canon fit and it's superb. It is heavy though as with all f/2.8 lenses, but it's very sharp and very fast.
