Hi there,

Went to Kruger Last July09, using my 80-400mm Nikonf4.5-5.6 lens on my D300. got some really nice shots.

I am Just in the process of booking a trip to kenya.

My question is i want a little more focal range, as anyone used the Sigma 50-500mm lens, and what was the results like. would i gain\lose Quality.

not able to compare with your lens, but iv just got the 50-500 for my d90, it is a tad soft at full zoom buit over all im inlove with it.

I have the D300 and Sigma 50.500mm. It needs decent light and it is sharper just off full range 490mm or so. But in good light in can take some great sharp shots. I have no problem hand holding it either. I have never regretted the purchase its very flexiable can take close ups flowers butterflies etc and then take a bird far off. So great all day lens. Good for airshows too.

I had a 50-500 on a D300 some time ago; it's a cracking lens around f/8, so if African sunshine delivers its promise you should do fine....however looking to the long term, what will your needs be in boring old British weather? The Nikon 80-400mm (also a previous lens of mine) pipped the post in terms of IQ, though the focussing is slower than the Sigma - critical for wildlife situations.

Not that I'm trying to lead you, but I now use a Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8, occasionally with a 1.4xTC (with little IQ fall-off). Fast focus and top IQ....it's hard to beat especially as in this budget range you could get a good secondhand example; go for the 'DG' if you do, as it has a better tripod foot which doubles as a carrying grip, whereas the non DG has a piddly little thing!
