hi i do lots of motorsport and use a nikon 70-300 vr lens but want more zoom ive been looking at the sigma 50-500m lens an just want to know what people think of the lens and would it be good for me and motorsport

thanks for ya help:wave:

Last night I read an article in the Spring 2010 issue of Digital Camera magazine "Sigma releases 5 new lenses"

One is 50-500mm f.5 - 6.3 DG OS HSM .............. £TBA

Presumably this is an improved version of the existing 50-500 (OS added).
Mag definately says f.5 which is odd since the existing one is f.4 at the lower end.

Price of the new lens is £1300 just looked on WHE I would be tempted to go for the 150-500 with OS as that is cheaper and since you are looking for additional length, I doubt if you will miss the 100mm at the lower end.

I am sure it will go down in a couple months time to more reasonable price. Either way before buying Sigma lens at that price I would thoroughly investigate their performance. the old 50-500 is lacking too much for its hefty weight and the price tag. It doesn't quite reach 500mm in real life, thus 300mm + 1.4 maybe a more attractive combo.

Got to agree with you there, Nigel.
I always thought that 50 - 500mm was a bit OTT.
I would not want to lug such a large lens about for shots at the lower end of it's range.

Some shots HERE on my Flickr taken with the new 50-500mm OS lens. I was lent it for a few days along with a 7D. Nothing special as I was testing the handling of the camera more than anything but the stabilization seems to work quite well.

IMO IQ wise, the lens is no better than my older Pentax version.

Thanks for that Mike, i was curious as to how this would perform and from your pics i can see it looks no better than a Sigma 170-500mm either. I dont think the addition of OS would make a 10x zoom and easier to use either.

100% crops would be interesting for completeness. Perhaps they should simply resurrect their 400mm f/5.6 + OS line and end this superzoom madness.

i have found the sigma 50-500 for £749 cannon and nikon fittment

As always, the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 gets high recommendations for motorsport. You can get good secondhand examples for around £1000...a big hike from what you're currently using but IQ-wise you wouldn't look back.
