Sigma 50-500 lens hood problem

The lens is superb, but getting the lens hood on and off can often be a struggle as it refuses to rotate smoothly. Is there a lubricant I can use?

hi is the thread ok? also have you got a filter on the lens if so what type and how thick is the filter i did hear that to thick a filter can cause the hood to snag

I have Sigma 150-500, I had the same problem, a little candle wax rubbed on the hood sorted it out.

i dont have that problem so far rob the hood on mine is a snug fit but i did read some where if there is to thick a filter on the lens it can cause the hood to snag and worst case cause the filter to get stuck on the lens ,

It was just the plastic to plastic friction between the lens and hood could be a bit stiff, rubbed a candle on the hood and bob's your mother's brother, smooth as can be.

The thread's fine and there's no filter. I'll give the candle wax a try!

Thanks for the tip, I have this same issue. Does the wax become an issue in hot weather, for example, getting on the lens glass?

I had an idea which I haven't tried yet, I've got some silicon spray for buggies which I have considered applying a small amount to a cotton bud and wiping it around the thread. Does anyone think this could cause an issue by possibly running onto the lens? I don't have any intention of using much spray at all.

The amount of wax I used (and it worked) was minimal so there was no chance it was going anywhere near the glass.

Spray a little into a jam jar, leave it for a while so most of the solvent evaporates off then apply a tiny drop (use a toothpick/cocktail stick). Stick the lid on the jam jar and you'll have a ready supply! A gentle application of a soft pencil (2B or... similar softness!) on the thread of the filter will provide some relatively dry lubrication as well.
