I've had two, loved them both, fantastic image quality and very compact. Here are a few of my shots with it on a D90...50-150 Flickr Set.

Apparently there is some sample variation relating to autofocus (but hey, this is Sigma), although I obviously got lucky.

No idea to be honest, it never sold in great numbers so it's fairly uncommon. Prices are all over the place, I think both of mine were around the £300 mark, but this was over a year ago.

It's a very nice lens, and much more compact than any 70-200 model (or the new OS version of the 50-150mm). The Canon version was known for front-focusing near the min focus distance, but I'm not sure if the same problem occurred on the Nikon. I'd say around £300 is a fair second hand price.

I have the new one, Sigma 50-150mm 2.8 OS version. Very similar if not identical to the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 OS in terms of size/dimensions. I use it with the Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 OS. Both are very good, I recommend them both. Definitely worth looking in to if you are not planning on going full frame any time soon, or never at all :)

Dealer prices are about £350 for a used non OS lens, so if you are confident the one you are buying is in good nick and focusses properly, £290 is a good price.

also comes with a hoya skylight filter all boxed the lot, will be picking it up aswell

The non OS one is smaller, as I recall it doesn't have the tripod foot either but then again it is more hand-holdable.

Being that you are picking it up in person then at least you get to try before you buy :) As mentioned, there is lens variation, check it through and make sure you are happy with the focus accuracy etc. If it's all good and 100% then £290 is a good price.

Hi, sorry to revive an old thread but thought it better than opening a new one

are these lenses anygood? i mean i hear of the front focus problem but only hear of it on canons, or are there problems on nikon too.
i can pick one up for around £200
its either go for older version or buy new version with os, would this be a good portrait wedding lens, i got a friends wedding to shoot in august.

I use the Pentax mount version, non OS and it's a brilliant little lens. Along with the Sigma 100-300 f4 it was the main reason I decided not to move to the Fuji X-Pro system at the end of last year.

As above, sorry for reviving an old thread but does anyone have any experience of this lens on a Canon mount?

I am looking to buying it from a shop that have one in second hand for £299 and it looks good but have heard some stories as above about poor focusing?

Many thanks

Dale

Excellent images on my 5D3 and 60D and no issues. £299 seems to be a good price compared with new. Take your camera along and give it a try?

I was just thinking that, wasnt sure how second hand shops would take to it, never purchased a second hand lens before!

Glad to hear you like it, no issues on the front focus bits and bobs?

How is it for focus speed in low light?

Thanks for the reply! :)

No issues at all.

As for focus in low light, I never used it in really low light but at all other times it focussed perfectly well.

I don't know if it's particularly meaningful but I got some pretty good images of the Moon at 500mm, f6.3, 1/200 and ISO 3200.

I used a mk 1 for a few years on a canon 50d and 60d, and loved it for great image quality and good focussing. However it was not reliable wide open [think it was front focussing] so I generally used it stopped down to f/4. I loved the focal length on a crop..

b****r, thats what I am wanting it for really the wide open 2.8.

Guess I shall have to go in and see as I heard there was reports of front focus problems on the canon fit

The front focus problems on Canon were generally wide open at less than 2m distance at the 150mm end of the zoom range. If that's not how you're likely to use the lens, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for that reply there, much appreciated, the likelyhood of full zoom at 2m is pretty much 0%... It will be on my second body for smaller tracks where my 150-500 is too long and my 28-75 is too short for my liking.

Also will be used for after parties where I want to stay at a distance so in theory.. again not used in less than 2m etc

So the front focus at 2.8 doesn't appear at larger distances?

That was the consensus when the lens first came out, and it was the case with the first one I owned. I sold that lens but bought another many years later. On the later one, I just used it instead of doing tests, and it didn't disappoint me :) While I still have the lens, I'm afraid I can't do any tests now as I no longer have any Canon bodies! If you are near Southampton/Portsmouth I'd be happy to let you try it.

i love this lens but currently selling it now wanting a 70-200, cracking lens and light

Did it not vignette heavily on the 5d3?
