I've just bought Canon 40D with Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and I'm looking to buy a new lens. What do you think about Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8? Do you recommend anything else? (I also thought about Tamron 50-135mm f/2.8)

hi toguko, been looking at these, and they seem to get a lot of good reviews. with the sigma make sure it is the mk11 as it supposedly fixes some slight problems at the short end, but supposedly as good as the sigma 70-200(according to the reviews) which in turn is comparable quality wise witht he canon 70-200 Ls. cant find much on the TOKINA 50-135 f2.8, but it seems to be about the same, havent found a side by side review yet though. they both only fit cropped sensor cameras though, so if you upgrade to the 5d or 1 series, they wont fit

thank you

one other thing, if you are thinking of buying an import, make sure you check the warranties, iirc sigma dont do an international warranty, but check it out, because im not sure of that

Been thinking of purchasing one of these two myself actually. I did a lot of searching on the subject and found these facts about the lenses.

1) Both are very sharp throughout the range.
2)Both lenses' sweet spot is at the short end.
3) Tokina's 135mm is sharper than Sigmas 150mm wide open BUT sigmas 135mm is sharper than Tokinas, so, what's the point of reviews saying that Tokina is sharper at the tele end, i am not sure.
4) Tokina is slow AF-ing. Sigma has HSM which is FAST, if it's anywhere near the focusing speed of my EX lenses.

I would personally go with the Sigma no questions asked. It is actually my next purchase, along with a Sigma 30mm f/1.4.

Found this site. It's in Polish actually and can't understand a word but has great comparisons. Go to where it says "Testy obiektywów", it's the lens comparisons.
