There doesnt seem to be much info about this lens around, and even less mention of it on here. Has anyone got a copy yet? Thoughts on it?

I bought one spur of the moment and as im stil waiting for my new d7200 to be delivered ive only had time for a few test shots in the garden with the dog on my d7000

Looks nice and sharp, focuses fast and im really liking the bokeh, although at pretty much the size of a 70-200vr2 its a bit of a lump

The title says 50-100 f1.8 but the images say 50-150? And the 50-150 is f2.8
I'm assuming you do actually mean the 50-100 1.8
Anyway, I don't have one, but it looks good.

I've been waiting for some decent reviews for this lens for ages. Little meaningful since the flurry of activity following its launch.

I'll be interested to find out what you make of it.
 
I'll give it a proper go when I get the d7200, but so far I'm really glad I bought it.
 
Considering this lens, doesn't seem over popular for some reason?? from what I've read it seems a good alternative to a 50 and 85 prime?
 
Just a tad expensive for me- I'll stick with my 70-200 f 2.8 for now -

the IQ seems spot on in your images- very nice indeed

Yes it does if it went to 150mm even 2.8 it would be more appealing

Funny I was thinking that, I was looking at one but the guy said it worked fine on his d300s but not so well on his d7100 so that's put me off especially as it's older now.and wouldn't be able to use the dock to adjust anything
 
To be honest it's a cracking lens but it's pretty much the same size as a 70-200 2.8 vr2 and still pretty costly.

Which is why due to the lack of time to actually use it mines now in the classifieds :(

I think the 50-150 would be the better option, it's seems after further comms that the guys got hand problems so it's not the lens after all,lol

That's a shame. There's a lovely 50-100 for sale on here ;) 50-150 a hell of a lot cheaper though!!
 
That's a shame cuz I would quite like a 14-600 1.4 that's the same size as a nifty fifty..
 
I very nearly went for it Adam but watching a 50-150 , it looks a great lens but I can see it going the same way as the 50-150 although I don't really see why that wasn't popular, the Iq looks great and 1.8 but I think the lack of OS , it's rather short focal range and it's size might be its downfall so I can't see it holding that price tag for long.
 
Quite possibly. But OS would have just made it even bigger, as would more focal range I guess

You never know with the development of the meta lens. Doubt it'll be in my lifetime though ;)

As for the 50-100mm it seems a bit of an odd focal length to me.

On DX it's the perfect range for portraits.

Yeah I guess that's what they're aiming it at, just seems an odd one as I'm not familiar of anything else with that kind of range, which maybe what they're banking on. Bold move to try and get some portrait shooters away from their beloved primes ;)

Although going longer, there's also the old Tokina/Pentax 50-135mm f2.8 and the Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 as mentioned above, not popular lenses but the Tokina did have a bit of a following, I had one.. like DX equivalent of the 70-200mm lens. Also, you currently have the Fuji 50-140mm f2.8mm. In general I think most DX shooters ended up buying the 70-200mm though, when these lenses were out/released.. Things are probably changing with these newer Sigma and Fuji lenses though.

Thanks. Yeah I was familiar with those, but as you say they are kind of DX equivalents of 70-200mm's, give or take, whereas the Sigma 50-100 is 75-150eq. It was just an observation though, nothing more ;) :p
 
Bought one 3 weeks ago and all looks good.

Its paired with the 18-35mm on my other body.

The 18-35 required a fair amount of adjustments with the dock but the 50-100 looks almost spot on.
Due to a holiday and dark nights I havent really tested it other than indoor and the back garden to ensure no issues.

Plan on testing it this thursday weather permitting so will report back.
 
i have the 18-35 and if that's anything to go by, then the 50-100 will be excellent, F1.8 across the lens is a world first Zoomable so they state, mine is very sharp and i think there touted as multiple primes in 1 so if you have both your kinda carrying 2 lens equiv of 6 primes...
I will get the 50-100 when the times right, but at present the 18-35 hasn't been off my D500 for weeks. Its all about the F1.8 end rather than the length, Sigma wanted a worlds first.

there are lots of alternatives but none at 1.8

I tested this in my local church this week and when i was shooting at F2.8 i had an auto iso of 4000, soon as you switch to 1.8 i was down to ISO 1250 at 1./40th so if lights your issue this is the badboy... It faired much better than my FF A7Rii but that was at F4 :) as i cant afford the extortionate 2.8s yet :)
 
I tried one briefly in a shop and I'm a convert. It's not that big and heavy, seems very sharp and seems to have that elusive 3d thing going on. If anyone is looking to shift theirs, I've a thread in the wanted section!

I had the same wanted thread for a while. They're like rocking horse doodoo on the used market, MPB claimed to me they've only ever had two used Nikon.

Keep your eye on camerapricebuster, I'm more than happy with Panamoz but got one for £775 Black Friday from Harrison's.

Finally got out with the lens, nothing too glamorous but few pop shots at thismornings boxing day hunt, all at 1.8 which is very risky with moving objects but wanted to push it on its first trip.

Fallen in love with the lens already and excited to put it to use at next years weddings.

Mine arrived yesterday, its girth and mass let me feel like a "real" photographer for about 30 seconds as I paraded around the house ... I then came crashing down to earth pretty quickly when I realised I needed at least 1/200 shutter speed to get anything approaching sharp ... need to cut down on the coffee! Edit: with 30mins practice and not jabbing at the shutter like a pubescent teenager, I can now hand hold it effectively at 1/30 up to 70mm ish :)
