sigma 30mm f1.4 of 50mm f 1.4 ?

I rarely have focus issues with any kit.

As I keep reminding myself... Canon themselves say on their web site that if you take three pictures you'll see focus differences between them and this is normal. So, we're all going to get missed focus shots now and again through our own fault and the fault of the equipment.

I think it helps to accept that and to do all you can to minimise the chance of missing focus by realising when you're on the edge of what the AF can do and focusing on something that'll give the gear the best possible chance of hitting focus. Another thing you can do if you think focus could be an issue is take more than one shot.

I've had 20mm f1.8, 30mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.4 Siggy lenses and I've been very happy with the focus performance of them all especially when measured against other make lenses.

thanks for all you input I have just bought the 30mm sigma f1.4 off the dreaded ebay paid by normal pay pal
2 years old boxed with all the bits for the bargain price of 165 + postage

Good luck with it. I hope you're happy with it.

considering I got a 30mm at such a bargain I left the 50mm sigma 1.4's in my watch list and clean forgot I had left a snipe on one so I have ended up with that too lol
but not at such a bargain price £286
however it is one month old and purchased from fforbes in July 2012 so will have a uk warranty
At least I will be able to test which one is best for myself
I'll let you all know if the 50mm IS as good as it as supposed to be

:D

I think that the 30mm is possibly a little sharper than the 50mm at f1.4 but they're both very good lenses IMVHO.

I tested my Siggy 50mm against my Canon 50mm f2.5 which I've read is thought by some to be Canon's sharpest 50mm and one of their sharpest lenses and my little tests convinced me that the Siggy is at the very least a match and possibly sharper than the Canon at every aperture the Canon could match. The Siggy also focused quicker and more accurately.

I hope you'll be happy with both lenses.

You may want to check out the Siggy 85mm f1.4 next :D I have one and it's a very good lens and better than the 50mm f1.4.

LOL You are very funny...I guess my Nikon 70-200 VR and 24-70 lenses must be terrible copies if I find my siggy 30mm sharp enough @ f1.4...:bonk:

I’m forming my opinion around the reviews of the lens, either they’re misleading, or my 35 F1.8 is the sharpest lens in the world.

Jokes aside, I still struggle to see why it seemed so soft in the review?

The question of 'have you ever used one' still stands though...

They are not as soft as you describe, far from it. This lens is exceptionally sharp wide open. Shame the focus is so hit and miss but the optics are superb.

I’m going off what the review put in front of me, they showed close ups of both images, the siggy’s were the softer, therefore I can justify ‘Never using one’.

Anyway, aside from the sharpness debate that has got way out of hand, I’d still take the 50, I find 35 to be too short a lot of the time, never mind 30, but its all down to what you prefer, either way you’ll probably be pleased. I’m actually considering the Sigma 50 as my next lens.

I can't comment on the Sigma 30mm as I have never used one, however I do own the 50mm 1.4 and I love it!

I use it on my 60D on which I have also used the Canon 50mm 1.8. Whilst the Canon is a very good lens for the money, the Sigma is better imho. Mind you it ought to be as the Sigma costs 3x the price of the Canon.

Hope this helps.

Andy

Just accept what many actual owners say... The Siggy 30mm f1.4 is a good lens and sharp enough at f1.4, in fact I found mine to be more than sharp enough.

I shall test them when they arrive and settle this argument, if I can get my 7d to focus
the reviews I read siad it was sharp in the middle but a little soft round the edges but struggled to auto focus at times
sounds like it is going to be a mare with my current 7d focusing issues

IMVHO one of the problems with focusing is that sometimes people expect miracles. I find that if you try to anticipate when things may be on the edge of what's possible and try to maximise your chance of getting a good shot your chances improve.

Aim at a low contrast sloping subject in low light with a large aperture whilst swaying backwards and forwards and from side to side and you're going to have problems. Pick something that the hardware has a chance of locking on to and remain stable and if necessary take more than one shot and you've got a much better chance.

you have been most helpful kind sir I shall try all that
I don't expect miracles from it I would just have liked it to focus on the point it said it was
at least I now understand why my shots are often out of focus which is what I needed to know as it was driving me mad
For that I give you a massive thank you and you are now on my Christmas card list
