Anyone have experience or opinion on this lens? I want to get a fast lens and I would like to do some portraiture with it.
Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM I have another sigma lens the 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM and it is really great. I love it.

Thanks

I've not used one but have read some reports of poor edge softness even at f/5.6 and the centre doesn't do much better until f/2.8. The charts on digital picture seem to confirm that

I would have thought 30mm is a bit wide for portraits. Somewhere between 50 and 100mm is more like it. Have a look at 50mm f/1.8 , eg here, or the faster versions.

far too wide if you ask me unless your doing a crowd, you dont want grotesque looking faces ! get a nifty probally cost less aswell

I agree or unless you want a Proper '50mm' Digital equivilant. go for a 50mm 1.4 also great for low light

But a 30 mm on a APS-C sensor is 48mm which is the so called "nifty-fifty" that is talked about.

the 50 only works on a cropped sensor because it's almost 80 i.e. short telephoto!!!

True but the compressed perspective of around 80mm is supposed to be more flattering for portraits.

Some of my favourite portrait and fashion shots where taken with 28-35mm lenses, which is why I got a 30mm f1.4. Great lens, pretty damn sharp and works wonders in low light. I tend to use it as my walkabout lens as well now. Eventually id love to replace it with the legendary Nikkor 28mm f1.4 though :)

Here's a shot I used the 30mm for;

Just took this sigma 1.4f 30mm on holiday to lapland, used as a walk around lens, works great in low light as lapland has very poor light (see my wifes compact comparison)

Also because of the wideish angle you have to do a lot of cropping in photoshop as a result, but with the resultion of most dslr i dont think this is a problem. I agree its also soft at 1.4 and the auto focusing at this f stop is hard work.

Overall good low light lens. I dont like to use flash as it spoils the situation so this is ideal for me. quite shocking how much light this lets through, just bump up the iso to get a 1/60 and your laughing.

I use it for portaits also, and at f8 its very sharp. Going to try it for some weddings this year.

I don't understand what you mean. Why would you want to crop them since it is a fixed wide angle. You use a wide angle because you want a wide angle not because you want a close up.

Ask Jane Bown if she thought 50mm on 35mm was far wide and gave grotesque looking faces. Over forty years shooting for the Observer only using available light with a 50mm lens on a beaten up old Oly, but then, what would she know?

Have you actually seen or tried the Sigi 30? I thought it was massive and gave it a thumbs down just for the weight and dia. I bought a nifty 50 1.8 (AF- Nikkor) and saved a lot of pennies.

Can anyone really notice the advantages of a 1.4 compared to a 1.8?

I personally love the Nikkor:clap:

MK - wonderful shot btw. Reminds me of a Chris Chapman. Have you come across his work?

The Sigma 30mm f1.4 is massive? Its one of my baby lenses. I suppose im used to using 300mm f2.8 and 150mm f2.8 lenses, but I still wouldn't call the 30mm f1.4 massive.

Thanks, I hadn't heard of him, but im looking at his site now thanks. :)

To be fair, it is massive compared to say a Nikkor 28mm f:2.8 but the Sigma 20mm f:1.8 really is massive, it's the same size as my Nikkor 105mm f:2 DC!

My Sigi 30mm f/1.4 is on its way right now, so I'll PM you once I've had a chance to test it.
:woot:
