I've heard bokeh on sigma is nicer than on the nikkor and that manual focus isn't that nice on nikkor (which i use a lot) but the sigma is huge and a shade wider than i want. opinions on both (af-d vers of 35) welcome. stuff i normally take photos off are on my flickr.

35mm f2 AF-D, light, sharp, great colour, close focus, if I could only keep 2 lenses, this would be one of them. (The other would be the 300 f4)

A couple of holiday snaps, cropped a bit and re-sized otherwise straight from camera jpegs. I think these show the out of focus areas (I refuse to use that stupid 'b' word) that you wanted to see.

Anyway actual pictures say more than words alone.

lol, the b word here seems nice, i think the problem is that the bo... b word on the 50mm f1.4 is so so nice it makes others seem less so.

i reckon 35 is one to go for but the thought of being able to stop down to f2 on the sigma and still have a sharp image (rather than being wide open on the 35) is attractive.

The Sigma 30mm 'b' (:D) is very nice. The 50mm 'b' is even nicer....:p

I've just been taking some test shots with my 30mm as it'll be up for sale soon. I can send some examples to you if you like. :)

The 35 f2 is fine wide open, and a lot smaller than the Sigma. (I have the 85 f1.4 and know what creamy out of focus looks like ;) )

I think that what I really like is the colour, contrast and resolution that I get from the lens, coupled with how small and unobtrusive it is. Whilst the Sigma OOF may be better, I doubt its colour, contrast and resolution would match the Nikkor.

OT...The Sigma 50mm isn't at all far off of the Nikon 85mm IMHO. :)

The OOF stuff certainly, but won't touch it for resolution of the bits that are in focus, nice lens though, as is the 30mm.

yeah fire me some pics sdb although i have to say im inclined towards the 35

from the pictures i have seen between 35mm and the sigma, the 35mm seems to edge a bit better on color and sharpness.

I have raised the issue on another forum, which i don't think is a very good forum cos one of the comments were "35 d is old lens, 30 hsm is new lens thus better" and also "30 work great in FULL FRAME mode". but people there seemed to rav every sigma prime and discounted the nikon ones, bloody weird, considering the name Nikon was in the forum's name

I think I should be taking offense to this thread....

I agree, but sometimes the posters pay no heed to the optical quality of a lens, which is to me the only concern, I can work around its focus speed, I can shoot without VR (in fact I prefer to), I cannot work around poor optics.

new is better....show me the forum, there must be a mountain of 'crap' kit to buy

Martyn, whilst there is no doubt the majority of Nikon kit (particularly primes) are optically extremely good, the Sigma 30mm and 50mm do not have poor optics in my experience. I have used both extensively and have compared the 50mm at length to the Nikon equivalents. I wouldn't swap. :)

I will be picking up the Nikon 35mm however that is because I have now gone to a FF system, if the Sigma lens was FF I wouldn't see a reason to change it.

well ive just found out ive got into med school so lenses may have to wait!

im still in shock
