Thanks i will have a look on ebay the 28-70mm i looked at was an older version for £135

i've been thinking about getting the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 DG, as a possible step towards going full-frame (probably a d700).

but will this give a 24-70 range on a crop sensor, like the D90?
or does the 'crop factor' come into play?

I have a tamron 28-75 which I brought second hand for around £170. Really nice lens. AF is a bit slow though

a 24-70mm on a full frame is a 24-70mm, on a d90 it is a 24-70mm but will give you the filed of viev of a 36-105mm in 35mm terms.
due to crop factor of 1.5x.

am trawling through the boards reading threads on this, it's confusing me more than I thought!

in essence, is it best just use FF lenses on FF bodies, and the same for crop lenses/bodies... to get true representations of the focal length.

no its not, just remember to x it by 1.5x on a nikon dx body,
this will help.

just remember that the one with the black line around is a full frame pic, so to get same field of view as the yellow lined pic(nikon 1.5x crop)
you will need a longer lens.
example

d300 with a 300mm lens will be the same as a d700 with a 450mm lens

or a d700 with a 75mm lens on will be the same as the d300 with a 50mm lens beacuse the d300 is a crop camera(effectivaly already cropping the pic).

thanks Scott! will give those a read and try and get my head around it :)

Having had a sigma 24-70, it's a good lens. But if you are not looking for speed, looking at the 16-85. It's a DX lens which means that it's designed for the DX sensors. It's a brilliant lens, has some good distance on it and has the added benefit of being a little wide on the low side - also had one of these, very good as well.

Though I don't think either are in your stated budget.
