Hi all,

saving like crazy for the nikon 24-70mm f2.8, i have just noticed that sigma do the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM...just wonder if anyone was using this on a Nikon D700 or D3...it seems to have been awarded alot of awards.and had some good press and recommended by what camera magazine..just wondered peoples thoughts on this pairing...

thanks in advance

I've got one of these paired with a D700. It's sharp and the focus is quick. Colours are reproduced well - a few examples with it in my gallery on here.

Only problem I have had with it was using it in France a couple of weeks ago - focus seemed to "jam" after 20 mins or so in the cold. Back in the bag for 10 mins, and all was well with it again. It was extremely cold when this happened though.

Cheers, Bradders.

That lens is under £600 at the mo which makes it really good value.

I considered one and very nearly bought it, but ended up paying the extra for the Canon L lens. Mainly because I'd only want to upgrade in the future and with the L there's nothing better (so I can't) - in my head that's cheaper in the long run.

You may find mixed user reviews as there seems to be the odd blunder in Sigma's quality control dept. I can't pass comment as I've not used a Sigma yet.

Nikon-nutter, from what i've read the Siggy is a great lens but as suggested, somethimes Sigma's QC isn't always spot-on. I hade a 70-200mm f/2.8 that I had to send back for calibration because the focus was off. Took a few days and they didn't charge.

Saying that, Sigma is probably the biggest 3rd-party lens supplier so these QC tales are probably in relation to the size of its business.

Another vote in favour of the Sigma lens paired with a D700.

I have had absolutely no problems with mine and am very pleased with the shots I get from it. As far as Siugma's QC goes, I have several of their lenses and haven't had any problems with any of them - some were new when I got them and some pre-owned.

Sigma will lose value a lot quicker than Nikkor. I guess you might want the latter at some point anyway so just go for it now. I bet in year or so 2nd hand Sigmas will be £400 or under.

edit: and this

Be aware there are two versions of this lens, the original non-HSM, and the much more recent HSM version [both are FX compatible]. No prizes for guessing which is the more expensive. I can vouch for the non-HSM marrying very nicely indeed with a D300 and hopefully in the next few days will be able to add my thoughts about its abilities with a D700. However, I do know that Nods comment above matches the non HSM version and he rates it highly. I cannot see a HSM version making a worse job of such a marriage tbh.

As for QC, yes, Sigma do have their fair share of 'friday' lenses as well as a few 'monday' ones too, but are usually very good at sorting them out and I can say quite honestly that I so far have not had a bad one from 5 or 6 I have bought new or s/h.
