I am looking at changing my old Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 for the new HSM version.

Will be used on a Canon 7D, and I feel my existing lens is struggling to keep up with the body?

Will I notice a big improvement, given it is approx £750!!

Any help would be great!

Cheers

No, its rubbish. Unacceptable IQ o full frame bodies - read PhotoclubAlpha or Photozone.de, certainly full frame Sony or Nikon bodies find the lens massively wanting in critical performance.

On crop you might get away with it, but honestly for £750 I'd look for a used Canon 24-70 myself.

Big difference then with the Canon 24-70 L I take it!!

OK, the Canon 24-70 is a bit creaky now (Nikon and Sony's 24-70 are much better) but even so...

lens. With its excellent build quality it feels like a pro tool and its huge diameter and front lens gives reason to hope for superior optical performance. Unfortunately, this is only true regarding sharpness in the image center stopped down.
Shot wide open, the lens shows considerably less resolution in the center and very disappointing border performance. In addition, vignetting is rather high, at 24mm even stopped down and the bokeh at all focal lengths is rather unpleasing.

So, in summary, it is a lot less convincing than the offerings by the system manufacturers.

Thats an interesting video, no comparison really!

Plus for that price, I would be getting a brand new great walkabout lens, as well as a functioning lens for my gig photography!

Anyone actually used it?

Cheers

Maybe...but looking at sample pics on the net I'd be happy with one. If I could take pictures like those samples...:) Which I can't. :'(

it's only £600 accoring to camerapeicebuster. it's a really good lens and does seem to score better than the canon version. I'm happy with mine on a 5D2 although you'd be better off with the 17-55 is with the 7D

Depends if you plan on going Full Frame or not. The Tamron 17-50 2.8 is a cracking lens in that segment, don't know about the Canon version.

if you have that money to spend go for the 17-55 f/2.8 or the 24-70L.There are cheaper options but you already have one of them and find it limiting.

I use the *old* Sigma with my 50D, in what way do you think it struggles on the 7D ? (I'm thinking of moving to a 7D ;))

I bought one last July as the review said it was good.

Took a few test shots at a wedding on a D700 (used my Nikon 17-55 on my Fuji S5 for the main camera) the result? Soft as butter, terribly soft in fact.

Also the mount on it is problematic and it repeatedly gives a connection fault on the camera.

It's a shame as it's half the price of the overpriced Nikon.
